Default step one: deadening

i posted this on fbodyaudio but that forum is dead slow...

my car is a '98 ws6, artic white, with a m6. i got it with 28k miles and it was SUPER clean. i've put 10k on it since may...

my plan is just a real nice stereo with clean install. i plan on building the motor and suspension as well, but i figure i'll start with adding alot of dead wieght so when i make engine mods i'll notice an improvement. i debated deadening for quite some time as i like to go fast, but in the end its my car and i simply enjoy driving more than whipping up on the guy next to me at a light. i'd like to get around 500hp, and i'm sure even with the added wieght it will still scoot pretty damn good.

what i got so far:

wiring - knukoncepts (300 bucks worth...)
sound deadening - 120ft edead v1, 1.5-2 gallons v3 (i doubt i'll use the 3 gallons i have)
head unit - apline 7998
front stage - cdt ef-6cf components in factory location with cdt image inhancement tweets in the a-pillars
subthump milhouse for 2 10"s, subthump amp rack

thats all i've bought so far, for the rest i'm considering:

rear fill - the cheap cdt 2ways. (i gotta have rear fill sometimes...)
subs - elemental 11k's, or image dynamics id10.v3's
amps - ppi art series, soundstream van goghs, or jl slash amps.

i will also be getting a 200amp alternator and either a yellowtop or redtop optima, i dont really know which battery would better suit me as i havent researched into it yet. i also have all the stuff for the magic 3, and i'll tackle that when i do the battery/alternator swap.

anyway, enough rambling. heres pics of what i got done so-far.

http://pics.montypics.com/badhoopty/...58_floor22.jpg

http://pics.montypics.com/badhoopty/...25_floor12.jpg

the floor behind the front seats has around 2-3 layers of v1, under and in front of the front seats has 1-5 layers. i'm kinda tired of ordering v1 so i think i'm gonna get some peel and seal locally and just put another layer here and there where i need it.

the doors have 2 layers of v1 on the outer skin, and 4-5 layers of v3 on the inner skin. i put a big piece of foam between the inner door bar and the outer skin, that helped a ton.

most of the the rear well averages 3-4 layers of v1 and 4-5 layers of v3. the rear quarters only has 2 layers, maybe they could use another still. the sail panels have 3-4 coats of v3. you can drop a wrench in the well and it just thuds, pretty cool.

theres some places in the car that dont really need alot, then theres some that still could use another layer or two. the doors are amazing now, thud... i know i'd get better deadening by putting the liquid over the matt, but its looks so nice blue and silver. i know it will all be hidden, but all the same i'll know it looks clean and thats all i care about.

next weekend i'll v3 the back of all the plastic panels and hit some spots with expandable foam. i have to put the spending on hold with christmas coming up, but i have enough to do to keep me busy. kinda sucks cause now ppi art amps are all over ebay...

i havent touched car audio since the mid-90's, and back then it was on a budget. i cant wait to hear what this is gonna sound like, it had better sound darn good for the time i already have involved. i'm hoping for real nice sound and at least 130ish db.

any comments/suggestions appreciated.

thanks, i hate when pics dont work...

the links work for me as of now and i've used montypics forever. yesterday for awhile i couldnt log into montypics so maybe they are having server issues or something. they do seem quite a bit slower than usual.

anyway i'll post them as pics instead of links, maybe that will do it.

can you see those?

Working perfectly and looks like you have a helluva project going on there, but everything looks nicely done so far. I've been meaning to put some sound deadening in my car, but man, just looking at the amount of work needed makes me cringe.

Pics all work fine! But I think you are getting a little carryed away with the multilayers? One layer is fine unless you are going for spl or db drags! I have one layer everywhere and 1/2" foam under major parts. But weight is something I am trying to stay away from, all the deadening weighed in at 12lb.

WHAT THE HELL? now i cant see the pics... lol.

anyway, thats 2 weekends of working on it, i didnt want to not have enough deadening, and i figured "hey, i already got this thing torn apart.." but i gotta say i'm officially worried about the weight. i would guess its probably 30-40 pounds right now. it is quite a bit of work to burnish that matt down (i used a wooden spoon and a heat gun), but the liquid is easy cheesy.

i dont think i'll add any more to the chassis, and only focus on the major flat areas of the plastic trim pieces. also plan on getting some thin foam weatherstrip to put between plastic panels that overlap and sit flush against the metal so no icky vibrations occur.

i'm a really skinny guy, so i figure the extra weight with the deadening evens me out with all the 200+ pound dudes out there. also, the majority of that weight is over the rear wheels, which should help traction a little. its crazy, even now with it all torn apart it feels a hell of alot more quiet inside.

just got notice that my subthump milhouse and amprack came in today, pretty excited about seeing that stuff even tho the subs and amps are gonna have to wait until after christmas. i'll more than likely have an extra gallon of edead v3 that i'd be more than happy to sell locally. so if i have any of it left after i hit the plastic peices i can pm ya if you are interested.

on the gas tank area, would you say on the top in front of the hatch flap, and then all the way down where the back seat folds down would be satisfactory?

i'm nowhere near an expert on this as this is my first time, but all the big, flat sections are where i would focus. i would definitely deaden the top of the gas tank area along with the well, that whole area rings like a bell. the area behind the rear seats rings pretty good to. if i had to put it on one place besides the well i would put it on the top of the gas tank area.

if you take out the carpet or move it out of the way and hit areas with the handle of a screwdriver you can tell which areas need it more.

Nice job. I'm glad to see you are taking the time to do it right. I've seen so many half-fast jobs to make me sick. I like the work. Another thing to do is to pick-up great-stuff expanding foam. Put it in all the dead areas that you can't get to. Example; filling the A-pillers and sill panels. basically hollow areas that you can't normally spray or put matting on. Also put some deadener on you license plate. It will keep it from rattling.

Also dampen the pastic panels. Good luck.

Looks really nice so far. By the way, I designed a system for my friend and used two ID V.3 10's, each getting 400 watts rms and they flat out slam, and sound quality is on par with JL W7 as well. <----No f*cking joke on that one. Just thought i would let you know since you are considering them anyway. Good luck and give us pics when it's all done!

i'll probably get the idv.3 10"s, or the elemental subs. although i might be able to get a few jl w3v2 10" for free as a result of an upcoming photoshoot.

i've foamed some parts/panels with the 2x flexible foam, i did inside the rear wing, inside the rear trunk lid, the 'firebird' section between the tailights (it needed it badly), and the crevices on both ends on the insides of the doors, i really dont care for the stuff so i'm going to call it good with the foam and if something needs it after i get everything installed i'll take care of it.

Good looking work. Where are you at in Chicago? I'm in the Army right now stationed in Texas. I used to work for Circuit City, Soundz Good on Western across from Lane Tech, and a Shop on Grand and Harlem ( can't remember the name right now).

by "the well" you mean the place where t-tops can be stored? if you have that plastic flap up, wouldn't that eliminate a lot of the road noise coming from "the well?"

yea the well is where the t-tops go.

i have a subthump milhouse box, which replaces that flap and points the subs straight down into the well. my main goal with the deadening isnt really to eliminate road noise as much as it is to keep the cars panels from vibrating and flexing like crazy when i get my system in it. i figure with no deadening the rear well would flex like mad when bass hits, and reduce the efficiency of my system.

if you yank the carpet out of the well and drop a screwdriver into it, it literally rings like a bell. with the deadening in there it just goes 'thud'. and once i put the carpet back in its gonna be quiet as all hell.
