Default Wiring harness for fuel pressure gauge

In the process of hooking up my Autometer fuel pressure gauge. Directions say to cut a 1" hole in the firewall so the wiring with the pig tail can be run through the firewall and hooked up to the sender. Does anyone really do this? I really ain't too fond of putting a 1" hole in the firewall. Thinking of just cutting the wires in the cab, running them through the firewall in a smaller hole, and then splicing them back together. Can't see there be any problems as long as my splices are good.

There is a hole in the firewall behind the PCM on the passenger side inner fender there should be enough room there to run the wiring.
