Does it make a distorted sound at low volume? Crackling sound also at low volume? Sounds like the speaker might be going out. I had a sub sound that way, crackling at low volume and rattled like hell when turned up.

i did and i went and looked at the alpine sps-170a speakers, are there any others that may be better/cheaper, or are alpine the best for the money and quality.

Is the crackling intermittent? My stock system has been crackling and the rear hatch speakers cut in/out from time to time. I have a hard time believing it's the speakers because sometimes they sound like new, others they whine, crackle, and cut in/out. At the same time I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it other than plugging in other "known good" HU, amps, speakers(which I don't have) to try to isolate the problem. I'm also thinking it could be a ground issue Let us know if you figure it out - I'll be tearing into mine once the weather breaks.

You mean you blew the speaker? Does it look like the cone is ripped?

If its just one speaker you probably just poped/burnt the voice coil. If you have a volt meter flip it over and test the ohm load. Probably just needs to be replaced
