Default Rear View Mirror

Does anyone know how to take apart the interior rear view mirror on a 2001-2002 car?

I know that it is possible to take apart the mirror that comes in the 1998+ by just separating the trim ring that is around the glass, but it seems to me that the mirror in my car is one molded piece. Appartently the mirrors were changed up in 2001 and I cannot figure out if it is even possible to do this.... I am wanting to take it apart so that I can get to the wiring for the map lights.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Ive never taken one appart from a 01-02 but you may not have to take it appart.

Why do you want the map lights?

There is a wire on the outside of the mirror for the map lights. It goes into the headliner. You should be able tap into it there.

Im with Steel... I cant get the mirror apart to get at the map light wiring to do the LED install. In another post Diesel said he took apart a 02 ss mirror so Im pretty sure its possible. I sent him a pm but never heard a response on how to do it. If anyone has or knows how to do it, please let us know.

Can you not tap that wire?

What LEDs are you trying to wire up?

I appreciate the effort, but that install was for an older model mirror. Aparantly they changed them for 01-02 and no one can figure out how to get them apart. That post you found is exactly what we are trying to do, the only step that is giving us problems is disassembling the mirror. thanks for the help though

They changed them in 00. I had to have mine replaced because the dealership broke it one day and they gave me a new but not the same mirror. I asked why not the same one and they said those mirrors were discontinued in 99 and this is the new one. At least that is what i was told,,,,whether its true or not i could care less, lol.

Anyone got any pics that I can look at?

I know on older model chevy trucks I would have to bend the plastic around the mirror and pop the mirror out.

I've tried taking apart one of the new style mirrors on a couple occassions, and I think it's possible to get in there... BUT, if you get it apart, I don't know how easy it would be to put back together. From what I've found, the outer housing seems to be a little flexible. Rubbery, if you will. To get it apart, you could TRY sliding a thin blade around the edge of the mirror and work your way around the edge until the mirror pops out. I really don't recommend doing this, but it's the only method I can see that would work.
