Default Upgrading convertible Monsoon system

I was looking carefully at the service manual and realized that in the convertibles the speakers are all powered from the amp. The sticky at the top of the forum states that the front tweeters are driven off the head unit directly (at least in the Camaro). Not so with the convertibles. This makes the head unit extremely easy to swap out since it just has 4 conventional speaker feeds from the head unit that go straight to the amp. The amp does all the sorting out of speaker impedance and frequency filtering.

So I swapped in my SONY head unit (a really nice Xplod unit made before the Xplod name was totally cheapened). This head unit in a previous car without amps at all could crank out some really nice and clear sound including some decently strong bass. So I expected a nice improvement in the Camaro. I got a lot more clarity and a ton of adjustability. However the rest of the system really shows its limits. The bass just goes to pot at a level I think is too low given the power the stock amp supposedly has, 200W my ***!

Is it the amp or the speakers that suck? I can't tell without swapping something out. I want to spend money in the best place first. I am thinking of ditching the amp and driving some new speakers directly.

Anyone have any advice?

i have a good xplod HU, and just upgraded my front speakers with infinity components,(spent like $200 on the components and $330 on my HU) it sounds soo much better than the stock speakers. i still have the stock speakers in the rear but im never sitting back there anyways lol. but ya ive read soo much, and everyones like, you have to buy a new amp all new speakers and HU, im my opinion, and those of my friends, my system sounds amazing(i didnt use the included cross overs that came with the infinity's) i also have an alpine type-r 10 pushing 1000w with a rockford amp...I couldnt be happier

Do you have the model numbers of the speakers you used? Also, are you driving the speakers off the head unit or still through the amp. I read this post and someone commented on the fact that the stock amp seems pretty decent, the blame should be laid on the speakers having paper cones.

infinity 6000cs, its wired with the stock wires, so its running off the factory amp.

the entire monsoon system is a great system when its new, the problem is that the cones are paper and dont last long, not that the speakers are blown, i guess you could say that the paper cones half-@$$ deteriorate over time lol

I have seen those speakers but I am guessing you have a Pontiac. I have nowhere to put the tweeters. What is the little box shown in the picture, a crossover?

ya thats the crossover, i didnt use these, mainly because i did my install in the winter and it was getitng late and cold lol...but it still sounds amazing with the factory cross overs, im sure sometime in the summer il get to putting the infinity cross overs in...

...the only question i have with wiring the cross-overs is, theres one input, so can i take the lead wires from both the tweeter and mid, and put them in the input on the cross over together?
