VATS- is it ever the module gone bad?
I did the search. I understand the system now. All the replies I read either exlained to test/bypass the resistor chip on the key or replace the key switch.
After I buy the switch/tumbler key at the parts store($45)
I have to bring the plain new key to the dealer and have another new key with the correct ohms chip($25) cut for the replacement tumbler - yes?
Is this no start, "security" light issue EVER the V.A.T.S. module itself?
I don't want to r+r the switch to find the darn module is my problem
thanks

hey chief!
i just went through this with my daughter's 00 camaro, 70k miles.
no indication of any problem & she goes to leave work, turns key & absolutely nothing to the starter, and dashboard security light stays on. I looked around a lot on several boards and I can't say that I saw maybe more than 1 or 2 actual VATS problems. Everyone's was the wire broke inside the ignition switch which is what my daughter's did also. She paid about $350 to have a new switch installed & they gave her new keys (why?) also. I'm wondering if the VATS is bad, would the dashboard light even come on? If ur doing the work yourself, might be cheaper to jump the wires with a resistor than replace a VATS that likely would be okay.
Hope this helps!

Normally the contacts on the key or in the switch wear out. I have not heard of many modules going bad. It is a simple test to find out. The system can be bypassed with a resistor.
To test the module find the wires in under the dash
Tap the same resistance as in the key to on wire and grount the resistor.
Cut the other wire.
If the car starts it is your key switch if it still won't start the problem is somewhere else in the system.
