When they say that you need an iPod-ready headunit, they mean that you can only control the iPod functions from the headunit if it is iPod-ready. That doesn't mean that you can't connect it - just that you'll have to use the iPod itself, rather than the radio, to control your music selections.
Bear in mind that there are two types of FM modulators - wired and wireless. The wireless ones are easy to use and require almost no installation but are subject to a lot of interference. The wired modulators connect directly into the antenna cable and are designed to shut off outside signals when they are in operation. The sound quality is like that of a strong local FM station (not quite as good as CD) but there is no interference at all. In fact, you will find that only the very strongest local broadcast stations can be heard at all on the radio when the modulator is on.
