Default Hooking Up Ipod

Hey I just got an Ipod, and all I've herd is problems about hooking it up (minus direct headunit specific adapters). Anywas FM Modulator is out of the question cuz most of the time those work like crap. I was wondering if I get one of those monster cable, mini to RCA Y adapters, and just plug it into the aux port on my pioneer headunit (like a 500 dollar headunit, its pretty nice) will it work ok?

whenever i have to use an FM modulator (in rental cars) i take the antenna off the car, makes 10000% difference. In my truck, I also have XM Radio (not stock like the new trucks) and it has the FM modulator that plugs into the back of my head unit. I just unplug the jack from my XM unit and plug it into the headphone output of my iPod. Sorry if none of this helps, but that's the best ways I've found yet.

The head unit wouldn't be playing the MP3's, so that shouldn't make a difference. The iPod would still be playing the MP3's and the head unit would be it's headphones.

If your Pioneer has an IP Bus line...proably does. It is best to use this new piece from Pioneer. I have one on the way for my vette.

it has an ip bus line but it says that device will only work with new so called *ipod ready* head units. I have the universal xm adapter from best buy that i beleive uses the ip bus line, so i was thinking before that i would just do that, but supposedly, it wont work according to the product info.

If your Pioneer head unit has auxiliary input jacks (RCA connectors for input) then you can just plug the mini plug-to-RCA cable adapter into it and select AUX on the headunit for the source. You will have to use the iPod's controls to make selections and it won't recharge the battery like the custom adapters do but it will work fine. Unfortunately, many Pioneer head units don't have auxiliary input connections - they rely on the ip bus connection to attach external devices.

When they say that you need an iPod-ready headunit, they mean that you can only control the iPod functions from the headunit if it is iPod-ready. That doesn't mean that you can't connect it - just that you'll have to use the iPod itself, rather than the radio, to control your music selections.

Bear in mind that there are two types of FM modulators - wired and wireless. The wireless ones are easy to use and require almost no installation but are subject to a lot of interference. The wired modulators connect directly into the antenna cable and are designed to shut off outside signals when they are in operation. The sound quality is like that of a strong local FM station (not quite as good as CD) but there is no interference at all. In fact, you will find that only the very strongest local broadcast stations can be heard at all on the radio when the modulator is on.
