the 'kit' I think they are referring to is a cd player cleaning disc. It has a built in brush that 'gentlly wipes the lens' during playback. sometimes they play music but mostly it cleans off the surface of the lens at the same time. In theory this will remove any dust or foreign debris preventing the discs from being read. In reality, the brush not only cleans off the surface but, more often than not, also knocks the lens out of alignment. It might work after being cleaned once, But it has a tendency to do more damage than good. IMHO, purchase a $7 can of compressed air and use this instead. Use the straw included with the can and insert it into the cd slot. use 1-3 second shots of air and see if this helps. Be careful not to shake the can during, or before you use it as the contents could come out in liquid form, not gas. this liquid can be harmful to certain electronic devices.
I have ruined more cd and dvd payers with the brush-cds than I care to admit. although the compressed air is not a sure fire solution, its cheaper than a new H/U, and better than nothing. If that doesnt work, there is always ebay or craigslist
