Default AM Radio Interference

Ok, I've done a quite a few stereos, but never ran into this problem before (it involves my beater, but same concept applies)

In my 93 civic DD, I threw in the HU I had from my old car (JVC) and it sounded great for what it was, hooked up a cheap Jensen 4x100 from eBay for 35$, and have four Powerbase (Infinity's direct consumer line) 6.5" speakers.

On FM, and with a CD, they sound incredible for what I paid!! But, I do drive 80 miles a day, and I gotta listen to Rush @ noon, and talk radio in the morning, and I get this crazy alien sounding noise (just like the little badger lookin monsters out of Half-Life) when I switch to AM. The noise does not increase w/ acceleration, and in town its terrible, in Hartford its much better (where reception is stronger). The noise is very high pitched, and is ONLY heard in AM. FM/CD is crystal clear.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Nothing really you can do about it other then replacing the head unit MIGHT fix it. When you have to cheap things, jensen and AM radio its hard to get quality. Im 99% sure that jensen put the AM antenna inside the radio so a booster would be useless.

He's right. AM antennas (antennae?) consist of a coil of wire inside the radio. Replacing the HU would be the only thing I can come up with. Not sure if XM is an option, but maybe something to consider.

1 Aftermarket radios have crappy am tuners.
2 Aftermarket amplifiers make inteference across the am band If you can turn off the amps or get them as far away from the antenna it will help
3 If you like rush that much get satalite radio

Thanks for all the input so far. I had the HU in my old car and AM was just fine, so it must be my bluelite special amp. XM seems like a deal...

Though someone said booster may work? I know the HU is good.
