Default Laptop into Head Unit, Have Questions

Greetings.

I have a good laptop with megatons of music (legal, thank you very much )

I want to hook up this laptop to an input in my Head Unit. Will any auxilary input w/ an 1/8" jack work, assuming using the audio 1/8" jack from laptop audio output into AUX input in radio?

I'm just tossing some ideas around to get this to work.

Thanks for lookin in my thread.

There is a possibility. It looks like Circuit City/Best Buy also offers products like those.

Another Forum I found on the issue:

Has anyone done this? It looks like fun ****!

Also looks like you can get a sound card w/ an optical output, and get a HU w/ an optical input, and wire it up that way.

This is starting to sound expensive. Maybe that FM transmitter might be my 1st option.

get a cheap pioneer, alpine deck ($150) get the aux input adapter ($20), get a mini plug to RCA adapter ($5) then get the parts to install a deck in your car ($30)

plug the mini plug in the headphone jack of your laptop, and connect to the radio

my stock 12 disk also has a tape player... I just connect a cd player car adapter to my laptop and I'm on my way. Cost ~ $15.

Here is how i added XM to my stock Monsoon system:

(I converted the CD-Changer port to RCA AUX-IN.)

I also used a line-driver/pre-amp to boost the signal:

Best way to add inputs

I'm for trying out the $5 Phono to RCA Y-cable. It's cheap and not a big loss of cash if it doesn't meet your expectations.

If you Need/want better clarity, get a PCMCIA Audio Card. That will allow better Sound tailoring. Some sound programs have great EQ settings to play with.

It's up in the air until you put the Adaptor in place as whether or not to get a Line Driver. You might not need it.

VIP1 I never did check out what the Black wire was for.

Dont worry about it, its working as it is.

My guess is that its for systems where the negative of the RCA cables is not properly grounded to the car (the radio's internal circtuitry handles this). Therefore the black wire is there to provide a ground. Its odd how it would cause a power cut though in my set-up.

I just made a cable that converts from the small headphone jack to a RCA cable and leave it hidden in my car. Its really great to just plug the laptop in and I also wrote a tone generator for the laptop.

I can play tones ranging from 15Hz-20kHz... but if I sit in the car with it around 20 for very long i get sick

my kenwood head unit has an adapter that plugs into the CD changer plug, and comes out to RCA cables (This One). i just got mine in today, as a matter of fact. of course, you'll need to make sure that if you buy a new head unit, that it has this capability, and that you get the appropriate adapter for that brand.

from there, i intend to plug a phono plug-to-RCA adapter cable into my 30GB NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 player.....much smaller and easier to tote around than a laptop. i plan on getting a car power adapter and hard-wire it into a 12v source so i don't have to worry about cables laying all around when i plug the thing in. i'll probably run that and the RCA y-adapter to the console compartment so they will stay hidden.
