Speaker Question?
Speaker Question? I have read everywhere that the factory Monsoon speakers are 2ohm speakers, and that you cannot replace with aftermarket speakers because of this reason.
I own a 98' Trans Am with the Monsoon system in it. I blew the speakers that are located in the sail panel by the back seat....I pulled the speakers out Sat. and pulled the covers off the speakers in the back also, and printed on the back of all six speakers was "4 OHM"
Now since my speakers are obviously 4 ohm and not 2 ohm, does this mean that I can replace with some 4 ohm Alpines' so to speak?

The difference is that a speaker rated at 2 ohms will take less energy to produce a given output than one rated at 4 ohms (ie: it'll be a bit louder). As long as you replace them in PAIRS, you won't have any problems. So, to answer your question, absolutely yes - you can replace your factory speakers with say, a set of Alpines. The nice thing about the aftermarket speakers is that they're generally more efficient, so therefore the difference I just mentioned becomes negligible. Plus, they'll sound better overall.

The Firebirds have dual voice coil speakers at 4 ohms that are wired in parallel to produce a 2 ohm load for the amp. The Camaros have single voice coil 2 ohm speakers. The net result is that both models present a 2 ohm load to the amp.
