What kinds of music?
Q2.) What kind/type of music do you Like/Recommend for Demo or Reference Material?
I like Most kinds of Music. The only Type I can't get into is Country. Rap has also Lost it's appeal to me as of lately. Favorits: House (Chicago), Metal, Alterantive is what I listen to mostly.
I have a Set of Referance disks from Autosound 2000 I use and have a collection of Songs that I'm EXTREMELY familiar with to tune a system.
My Tops for Dynamics testing is
Bush; Sixteen Stone , Glycerine
VAST; Touched (I recommend for those who like the Cure, Deftones. Only Nude, and Self Titled Album)
These will push the limits of the Entire Sounds systems. They get progressively lounder and louder. Both cresendo out into a Large out out Afront ont the Ears.
Vocals:
Eric Clapton: Tears in Heaven Good for feeling emotion in a Man's voice.
Marvin Gay: Anything from him, but I love "What's Going On" Supreme Classic.
Alicia Keys.
That's what I can think of off the top of my head.
However, I do mix some instrumentals/vocals/mixed recordings to properly test the freq spectrum for accurate reproduction. This would include jazz, contemporary, country, and progressive.
Some of my favorites:
Boney James (sax)
Eagles (When Hell Freezes Over) "Hotel California"
Eric Clapton (Chronicles of Clapton)
Allison Krauss
King Singers (occapello)
Marc Cohn
Carly Simon (Greatest hits)
...and for sound pressure, Usher "hey" (hits my frequency perfectly)
I am a head-banger from way back in the 1970's, but nothing beats the classics

heavy metal (Pantera, White Zombie, Fear Factory, ...)
death metal (Bolt Thrower, Malevolent Creation, Entombed, Obituary, ...)
thrash metal (Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, ...)
rock (Creed, Godsmack, Alice In Chains, ...)
classic rock (The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, ...)
alternative/grunge (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, ...)
rap (Eminem, Tupac, Mystikal, Nelly, ...)
industrial (Prong, Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, ...)
trance/goa techno (Astral Projection, Growling Mad Scientists, Talamasca, Alien Project, ...)
then there's stuff that only fits into a category called "original & unusual", some of which i like the best over most other stuff (Primus, Ween)
i can't STAND country whining...errr....music, don't do gospel/holy music (being that i'm atheist/agnostic/pagan/whatever), and i wanna VOMIT every time i hear some
boy group/girl group teeny-bopper crap.... so as you can probably guess, i never listen to the radio....
as for source material for tuning my system, pretty much any song/instrumental that has a wide variety of sounds within the same song, like songs that go from quiet to loud, fast to slow, mellow to "all hell breaking loose". electronic/industrial type music is good for tuning with when done properly, because of the sheer range of sounds that can be created.

Steely Dan - Aja and The Best of Supertramp for general.
Rebecca Pidgeon - Spanish Harlem or a Shawn Colvin disk for being able to nick right down to clear vovals with a known (meaning not too over engineered) background.
These aren't meant to float your boat as much as give you material that you can relate to in terms of clarity.
That said, where can I get a copy of this Sheffield disk? Is it a test disc or an artist?
