Default Trouble removing front speaker grills

I tried removing my speakers grills in the front door, (thinking they would come out like the back ones right) The seem to have a tab that has been factory melted to the door panel. I can't remove them without breaking them. Anyone else had this problem?

i think u have to take off of the whole door panel. i know when i had speakers put in the doors of both cars, they took off the whole panel. i too tried to take off the grill on the SS thinking it would be easy, but i nearly ripped the grill trying

Yeah,
I had the same problem, almost ripping the grill off. It almost seemed as if it was factory melted to the panel. Wierd

It doesn't seemd glued in. The actually have a foam surround and such. The are detachable. It just looks like during installation one of the tabs,(the top one) was melted to the panel. The rest are actually okay.

Is there a link somewhere with pics of a removed door trim panel?

the top and bottom tabs have definitely been melted into their respective slots. I don't know why they (GM) would do this. I bought my '00 SS (in May '01) slightly used. My door speakers went out a couple weeks ago. That's when I figured this out. I tried to pop the grill off the driver's side to find out what was up with the speaker. The SOB wouldn't come off. So, my temper took over and I ripped that sucker right outta there. (btw, those grilles run about $8 to $10 each) I thought the previous owner had glued them in (passsenger door's the same) because my '93 wasn't like that. They just snapped in and out like the rest of them. Wish I had looked here first, could've saved myself some aggravation and money.

Did you order your replacements from your local GM dealer or online?
I thought about just ordering some new ones and ripping the old out and throughing them away.

I've got a buddy at my local Chevy dealer's body shop. He ordered them for me. I paid cost (I think) plus shipping for both doors. $24.00 even.

I ripped mine off when I replaced my door speakers, and I didn't have to pull off the door panels at all to get to all four screws. I simply pried up on the panel and I could get to all of them with my socket. Figured it was easier than pulling the panel off. My grills snapped right back into place and you couldn't even tell that they were ever taken off

my door grilles had a total of 6 tabs, 2 on each side and one each at the top & bottom. the 4 on the sides just snap in, but the two at the top & bottom were melted into the door panel itself. when i replaced my speakers, i cut the top & bottom tabs off, so now i can remove/replace the grilles easily....those 4 on the sides hold it in pretty well

So it doesn't rattle at all now?

I ended up removing the entire door panel on both sides which was easy to do once I read about it. That way I didn't have to mess up the panels. I was afriad they would've rattled if I had removed them by cutting those tabs.

nope, no rattles....at least not from cutting the tabs.

i cut a hole right in the middle of those grilles to flush-mount the tweeters directly in front of the woofers, and the back of the tweeter pods are getting tapped by the woofer when i crank it up, but all it will take is a little trimming of the plastic on the back of the tweeter pods, and it will be OK
