vats/resistor question

vats/resistor question a couple of times I had a problem with my car not starting and the security light was on. so I done some research here went to radio shack and got the resistor I thought I needed. which is 4.7k-ohm. but when measured it reads 4.62. my key reads 4.75. my question is will this difference cause it to not work or will it be ok to use?
I think it's a certain range, it doesn't have to be exact, just close... Try it & if the car starts with no secruity light after it's been running for a bit, then you're good to go. No it won't hurt anything either.

Does anyone know where the orange insulated wire that has 2 white insulated wires inside it? I read another thread about it being inside the steering column. These two white wires are the ones you have to connect with the resistor. Any help would be greatly appreciated since my car hasn't run since last Friday and its my only car.

No, the wires you want to connect are white with black tracer and purple with white tracer. You should find them at the base of the steering column.

The two wires are together but you might have to search through a bunch of wires at the base of the column to find them. It shouldn't take too long - just be patient.
BTW, you have tried just cleaning the contacts on your key and inside the ignition cylinder, haven't you? A little spray contact cleaner is a lot easier than rewiring.

I cleaned the key a little but not the cylinder. I'll do that tonight first but I already have my whole lower dash disassembled since I wasn't sure what I was looking for when I started. Steering column is already dropped and wires are just hanging all over the place. If cleaning doesn't fix it, rewiring won't be that much of a task at this point. I finally found a thread that has a pic of the wires your talking about. Thanks for the help. I plan on getting some pics of the rewiring if I have to do it.

While I'm thinking about it, does it matter which wattage resistor I use for the bypass? I saw some that were 1/4 watt and others that were 1/2 watt. They had the same ohm rating but I'm not sure if one will work better than the other, etc. Or does it even matter at all?
