Default VERY expensive Clarion head unit?

Hey guys, just a quick few questions for you. It's looking like I'll have the chance to pick up a Clarion VRX755VD head unit for 700 bucks or so. It's my GF's head unit out of her crappy escort she sold. Head unit was worth more than the car, as she spent nearly $1700 for it new. It's got a retractable 7" touchscreen, and looks incredible. Because of the way the screen moves and folds up, it has to stick out of the dash about a 1/2 inch or so, ruling out using the steering wheel control converter eye mounted in the stereo bezel.

She'd be willing to sell it to me, But I'm really afraid of losing my steering wheel controls. I know they make a converter box, but it MUST work. I can't live without them. I'd be real teary-eyed if I got the head unit installed, and found my steering wheel controls won't work. Where might I mount the emitter eye where it's KNOWN to work?

Bottom line, Whaddya think? Would it be worth it? Anyone else have any experience with this head unit??

dude, that is the exact one i wanted but i couldn't afford it. those ipod controls are SICK! i thought there was box with a direct connection, w/o using an emitter eye. and if you had to use one with an emitter, i would think it would work w/o a direct line of sight. either way, i wouldn't even worry about it...you'll be using the touch screen!

I would guess the problem is, just because i've got the money, doesn't mean I should spend it, on a head unit with waaaaayy more functions than I'll probably use, and spend the money, just 'cause I can. It's still a lot of cash, and I'm real worried about running into some compatibility problems. Just because it says it'll fit in the dash, doesn't mean it'll fit my idea of what I wanna do with the car.

I guess serious sound systems aren't my thing, I'd probably be happy with just a small amp, and stick it under my left side wheelhouse trim panel, (if I could fit it in there, somehow.) and power my JL stealth side box. Know the one I'm talking about? I doubt I'd ever take it any further than that.
I guess I'll have to think about this a little more.

The steering controls are essential, and if there's a chance they won't work, I won't do it. I can't stand the thought of having controls that do nothing.

As far as the FAQ goes, I looked in there, but it didn't address my concern about mounting the emitter eye for the cleanest look possible with a somewhat unconventional head unit. I'd prefer a direct-wire hookup, if possible, but I did some searching, and couldn't find one for Clarion.

Sorry for rambling on like this, just interested in hearing your experiences with in dash dvd players and advanced head units like this one.
