Default reverse light LED

has anyone ever changed the backup lights on a camaro to LED? i dont mean just plugging an LED bulb in, but using an array of LEDs similar to what people have done for the license plate light and dome light. there are some decent looking 100,000mcd 10mm LEDs i think might be pretty cool.

where did you find them? what is the viewable angle on them?

only thing with LED lighting that I find is the light dissapated very quickly compaired to a regular bulb. Meaning you wont get teh same "lighting up the area behind the car" effect you get with a bulb. Although 100,000 would have to be bright as hell to look at. Brightest I've looked at was 6000 mcd and that was literaly painful to look at

There are eBay sellers out of Hong Kong that
push huge quantity out cheap. I got a hundred
whities once, I think only 10,000mcd though.
And a hundred resistors for another buck.
Meaning to cobble my own trunk light but
still they sit in the box.

A larger array of lower brightness ones might
give you the more diffuse field of illumination
you'd like (not to mention, price per mcd is
better at the not-leading-edge end of things).

you think so? i'm just getting into this whole LED preparing to do my first LED project so i dont really have a real good sense of brightness for them yet, and i really dont know the lighting affects of one big one or a bunch of little ones.

but doesnt it make sense, array of brighter LEDs is brighter than array of smaller less bright ones? i dont know.

here are some links:

and check it out, some 110,000mcd ones, only 95,000 typ. but DAMN!!! and viewing angle on these is 25 which is about 10 degrees wider than the other links.

I really don't think this is a good application for Leds. The things are crazy bright to look at, but that's not what you really want for reverse lights. They don't have a very wide or more specifically, long throw compared to normal bulbs.

Not saying it wont work but if you have an itch to try leds out there are probably better areas to try.
