I would've bought a V1 but the price was unbeatable and I was able to get my 1 year warranty still. I have tracked Highway patrols from distances beyond eyesight giving very adequate time to slow down. But don't get cocky because not every one uses laser/radar to pull you over.
yeah i did mean i was decided on the passport 8500 X50. thanks!

just got back from a 3500 mile trip, averaged 80+ mph, no tickets.
has laser capability, but if that goes off I figure its too late. It did once, but the guy comin up behind me was going about 10mph more than me, and he got nailed. I had time to slow down. Lucky that time.
I'd highly recommend the 8500-50, but if I had it to do over, I'd prolly go with the V1 for it's directional capabilities. the passport and V1 are are the best there is.

check this site out, I found it very helpful in making my decision.

I have the same one and I love it. The 8500 rocks!! No tickets yet because it sees the cops before I do.

I have a Cobra XRS-9400 ($100ish) in my GN and some off beat Radio Shack (X-mas gift) one in my Formula. Both work great but I find myself not bothering to turn them on unless I am on a trip or plan on playing around on the street.

Anyone have a concealed radar detector? I would like to get one but am not to happy about pasting it onto my windshield. Looks really stupid to me. Escort has one but it runs about $1000 for the basic model. Anyone have something similar?

I'd like one but the $1k price tag pretty much says no, mines hidden enough, it's above the rearview mirror, and hardwired in, so unless you stick your head in the car you can't see it.

FYI radarbuster.com is a load of ****. if you didnt notice, they sell radar detectors, they dont sell the V1 though. therefore, they have something to gain by giving the other detectors better reviews. IMO, V1 is the best hands down, but if your going to do your own research, try and find an unbiased site, like one that doesnt sell radar detectors.

I was thinking of mounting it high, but doesnt it need a clear line of sight out the back and the front of the car? Lets say the detector was on the windshield with the rearview mirror right behind it, would that obstruct the detertor's view of the back of the car? Or is that a negligible factor.

With any detector other than the V1, blocking the rear would be OK. These other detectors don't have a rear antenna, so they depend on radar reflected off of terrain in front of the vehicle to alert to radar from the rear. There usually is a rear laser sensor, but from what I have seen these are blind as a bat anyway.

The trouble with remote-mount radar detectors is that they are mounted lower, so they have less "line of sight" with the targeting radar and thus less detection range. They are also more prone to being blocked by vehicles in front of you.

BTW, Beltronics just released a new detector. It's $450:

We plan on testing one as soon as we get our hands on it, check out the links in my sig.

Interesting. I'd be much more worried about a highway patrol car driving up the road behind me. I suppose I can offset it a little to the left or the right.

I have an old *** Bel, and it still works like a champ despite being dropped and having the outside broken.

I got one right after I got my speeding ticket, an 81 in a 50. I haven't gotten a ticket in two years. I drive 5 over in every area, except in 65mph zones, there I do 10 over. Usually I don't push it any more than that. Occassionally in the 65mph zones I'll push it up to 80 to pass. That's all, not a huge speeder, but I do drive spirited on occassion.

Be aware that they won't prevent you from getting tickets. They're to be used as a tool to help avoid tickets. If you use them properly and get to know what places in your area have radar signals floating around, they are useful as hell and more than pay for themselves.
