I have two birds, both with remote starters (Prestige and Compustar). I don't know about hooking it up myself, but as far as the shop doing it... they need to have a bypass for the key sensor. I think it adds like 10 bucks to the overall installation.

Lastly, I haven't noticed any difference in the factory alarm. Actually, one of my two birds has the factory alarm and the aftermarket still running together. I would try to find a different place to look at it. Most car audio places sell the car starter/alarm kits and can give you several different options at various prices. Just call around. Good luck.

they are not hard to install. And if you buy a remote starter that is from DEI, they give you the resistors to bypass the VATS.

Or just test the key your self with a ohm meter and buy the correct size resistor. Then unplug the 2-wire harness from under the dash and put the resistor in the harness part that is going away from the steering column.

I have remote start on mine. Had it done at some dinky little electronics place for $200 w/alarm (prestige). Seemed to work great, then it stopped working. Had cartoys do a couple things for me and they fixed it while they were in there...the wiring was crossed somewhere. Anyways, yes it is awesome and it is easy to bypass the key...they just put an in-line resistor in and made a copy of my key w/out the chip in it and it works flawlessly. My only advice...Have a big name company/installer do it for you.

oh yah, and don't forget to pay attention to the capabilities of the unit...I have to be somewhat close to the car (50 ft or so) for it to work and I've been told that you can get viper systems that will start the car from 100 yards or more.

Compustar, 1/2 mile range. Though I'm not sure why I would ever need to start my car from that distance...???

No need to make a copy of the key in your case. "techincally" the place that installed it should have used a relay so ONLY when you remote started it, it'll use the resistor. Then when you used the key it would still have to have the correct key in it to start. I didn't do this on mine, as I wanted it by-passed permantly. My 93's key or the key cylinder on the car started to wear so you had to push the key a certain direction to allow it to crank.

1/2 mile range does come in handy. Like when I park my car at the mall or wal-mart out in BFE, I can start it right when I get outside and the car will be warm by the time I get to it. Same in the summer. I can probably count on both hands the number of times I've actually started my car with the key.

you can get a remote start on a manual...but its techincally illegal in the US. but you can usually get the guy at the stereo shop to put one on for a few extra bucks. they just dont want to be liable if you start your car and it rolls away

Yep exactly! Might not get a install receipt so you can't prove they put it on there too. I dunno, but the CompuStar's remote start for a manual has a couple of key features that "should" eliminate the possiblity of it happening. YOu have to do something before you get out the car for it to work. ALso you must have the ebrake pulled cause it verifies that it is before it'll start.

I have Clifford Solaris G4 on my auto. Had mine installed from Frys. I Thought it was pretty coo, since I could come back anytime and have the guy who installed it trouble shoot it for me. But as far as the convienience, its really helpful. When you're in the summer, or its pouring, its nice to have your car already up and warm by the time you get there. PLUS is hella funny to see how girls react to it. " OMG someones in your car!" Haha.
A safety feature for my alarm like for stick cars, is that the e-brake must be on and in auto the car will not remote start unless in P. I'm not sure if in manual cars the car will not start unless in neutral but i dont know.

The Viper 791XV is what I'm going to get. You can pay $500+ at Best Buy etc, or $200 on Ebay.

this is true but
A: you get no warranty through DEI
B: can YOU install it, and install it correctly?

Basically, when you buy these systems at shops, you're paying mostly for the warranty and gaurantee that its working properly. I'd think about having the shop do it. I have a friend that installs them and he has had one or two (when he started) that poured smoke when he hooked the battery up. Just a thought, but peace of mind is worth a few dollars.
