Default Front speakers INOP sometimes...

I am hopefully going to be buying a 98 Z28 in the near future. The only problem that the car has is that the two front door speakers don't work sometimes. The H/U is stock ( I assume its the monsoon? I know it has a single CD player) and the guy said all of the speakers are aftermarket Kenwoods. Do any of you guys have an idea of what this could be? I appreciate any help. Thanks guys.

If they work sometimes and not others, I would think it's a bad connection in the wiring. There is also a possability that the amp is on it's way out.

If you're losing the door speakers completely on both sides, it could be the head unit. Also, check to see if you have an amplifier hidden behind the spare tire. The Monsoon sytem was optional equipment. So it is not in all late model Fbody's. The head unit looks pretty much the same in the Monsoon equipped and non-Monsoon equipped cars.

Ok, I'll look at that when I can. If it was the H/U it would just do it to the two door speakers and not ALL of the speakers??

Depends on what's wrong with the H/U. Since your losing 2 speakers, it is either something loose in the electrical connections at H/U or the amplifier (if Monsoon). Or something is electrically wrong internally with either of those items. Nothing else, I can think of that would cause you to lose both front speakers.

If you do have the Monsoon system, it could be faulty wiring between the H/U and amp.

Okay, well I got the car and it is NOT a Monsoon. I know I should check the connections, but more than likely it is the H/U correct? Since I'm losing both front speakers?

More than likely.

Ok, so regardless if I have a bad connection or a bad H/U, if I get an aftermarket H/U, it should solve my problem?

Probably, with the added bonus of better sound quality.

eh....... turn it on, and off

listen to see if ONe speaker makes a slight POP sound. If it does, one of your speaker wires is grounding out. I would say that either your speaker is grounding out, or your amp/HU has just about had it

I tried this today and heard absolutely nothing. I also took the H/U out and wiggled the wires and checked the connections and got nothing. I figured since both front speakers aren't working the bad connection would be at the H/U. Before I buy my new H/U- I want to be sure that the speakers aren't blown- even if they were blown they would still make some kind of noise wouldn't they??

They should. And it is unlikely that both front speakers blew at the same time. Although, it could happen. Besides, didn't you say that the speakers worked some of the time?

Then it is probably a good idea to rig something up to test the speakers themselves. Befoer spending buck on a head unit.

Silly question: Did you check to make sure you actually had speakers in the doors?

Yeah, there are speakers there. How could I test them? Could I just take them out and hook them up to the stereo in my room real quick to make sure they work? (Are they very hard to remove? You have to take off the door panel don't you?)

Yes. I believe the LT1 Camaros have essentially the same door panels as the later Camaros. Taking the door panels off is relatively painless. Of course, if you have manual crank windows, it's a bit more difficult. But not much. Pretty much only 6 screws holding the thing on.

I just checked the drivers side door speaker and it works great hooked up to something else. So we are pretty sure its the H/U?

Obviously, it's the HU or the speaker wiring.
