Default Why does everyone diss Monsoon?

My T/A has the monsoon system and I am honestly impressed with it for a stock system. Yes, I am an audiophile, I know good quality from junk. Im into Hometheater, Computer, and auto audio, so I do have a trained ear.

This system is not too bad. It isn't unbelieveable but im impressed and want to know why erveryone disses it. I have my eq set up with a bit of a treble boost. All middle and a slight curve up towards the high end. It gets pretty good loudness level with low distortion. Fairly Crisp.

Most audiophiles will agree the Monsoon is a MEDIOCRE system at best. You will experience over time problems w/digital LCD's on the HU, and more prevelant are the speaker issues that most ppl have problems with over time.
In fact, if you ever tear down the system, you note the extremely thin gauge wire, and Made in Mexico Delco speakers (lol).

A common problem is the EQ that ppl boost and causes distortion(overmodulation). In time, those speakers will not hold up!

If you ever sit in a competition car, and compare, you'll notice a significant difference.
Many of us compete (or have competed) and you may find this website a good reference site.

The stock Monsoon system didn't sound very good to me, bass was distorted if I turned it up any...Once I added some subwoofers and a aftermarket HU so I could remove some bass from the stock speakers I liked the way it sounded. Now that I added 4 Infinity 62.7i's, I really like the way it sounds. The T/A has a little better setup, so may sound better than in the Camaro's.

I have some infinity kappa's laying around the house. Do you think it would be worthwhile adding them to the door speakers? Or would It just be a waste of time?

I had the Kappa 6.5I's (silk dome) comps and they lacked power IMO, but consider me a "head banger" from way back! Definitely a step up from OEM speakers.
Now I assume they are 4ohm speakers, correct? One set of the Monsoon comps is a 2ohm, but cannot remember front or rear location? It has been several years since I upgraded to my current system.

Loud and Clean is how I like my music!

I liked my Monsoon system, but then the lights went out on the stereo, then the front speakers went too. So I got new front speakers and they sounded great with the monsoon radio, then when I upgraded to pioneer stereo, the whole system sounded cleaner and louder then before. Still got a little distortion on the aftermarket tweeter that are still run by the monsoon amp, but still sounds better then stock. If the stock speakers and the monsoon light had not bunt out I would still have been satisfied with the stock monsoon system.

The latest kappas that came out in 05 are 2ohm and have dual connections(62.7i). Depends on the ones you have.

I have the monsoon in my car, I was going to buy some speakers cuz mine are blown. They said I will have to change everything out because the factory is on a different ohm? They said it would work but they would blow out faster or they wouldnt work at all. Are they right here? I wanted to install my aftermarket cd player and replace the speakers by the rear seats. Should I just replace everything @ once?

Yes, practically every stereo shop will tell you that. That doesn't make it true. There's nothing hard about replacing speakers in the Monsoon system. And don't worry about that 2-ohm/4-ohm crap. 4 ohm speakers work fine. And no, they will not blow sooner or more often than stock just because they have a different impedance. Remember, never ask advice from someone who has a vested interest in convincing you to buy something.

All of mine are 4 ohm.

Before upgrading, I noticed that the Monsoon sounded better when all the sound was faded to the fronts. Possibly a little more power to the speakers doing this...

I noticed this too...but was the crappy 4inch speakers distorting at high volumes in the hatch...went with Pioneers too, but still same results...some people have good results replacing the 4inch in the hatch, but the $50 Pioneers didn't sound good. The sailpanel subs I think work full volume when the fader is set to front/back centered. I noticed when I played my front speakers only after adding the 62.7i's, it sounded great, then when I added in the back ones it didn't sound as good...found out the left sub in the sailpanel was working off and on, 4inch speakers were not able to handle the HU power(kenwood) at high volumes.

I think another variable is, quite frankly the average driver of our cars is probably in the 16-25 year old range. Expecting lots of bass and very high volume output, abusing the system to distort and blowing the drivers.

Another issue is durability. Lots of blown door and sail panel subs, lots of head units with display connection problems. Go to get parts and find out GM dealer prices are really high.

Then, consider that compared to current audio systems factory f-body systems are really showing age.

I didn't have any problems with the monsoon in my vert, but I thought it was a pretty average system for any sort of "premium" oem solution, and very weak compared to even the most basic aftermarket setup.

Mostly just remember people aren't inclined to post about things they are happy with. We post when we have problems or are looking for help.

Yea, my speakers are blown almost all the way around. I'd like to put in new speakers, but I think there may be an amp problem, as well. So... Is there a way to get a new system, and yet keep the old headunit? I really like the look, and a new headunit would look so out-of-place.

It gets dissed because people are fed up having to replace blown speakers, head units, lights, volume *****, etc..

But it is a good system
