Default Sail Panel Power??

I was wondering how the sail panel speakers are powered. I installed my h/u a few days ago and there are only wires for the RF, LF, RR, and LR. How does the sail panel speakers get power?? and would it sound better if I wired them directly to the H/U and said screw the hatch speakers?

you know i have no idea where they get their power. on mine it is through a 4-channel amp but stock i dont know, i would think it would sound better if you wired those up to the h/u instead of the rear. i personally didnt like the sound of the rear and just took them out.

Yeah, I have no idea either. BTW, it's not a monsoon car.

I'm just guessing, but likely they are wired in parallel with the hatch speakers on the rear channels in the non-monsoon system. I'm assuming you've checked and there are actually 6 speakers (2 doors, 2 sails, 2 hatch). I had expected the non-Monsoon cars had only 4 full-range speakers, all powered by the head (2 door + 2 sail or 2 door + 2 hatch)

You are sure there isn't a Monsoon amp tucked up in front of the spare tire? You really have to look hard to see it. Especially in the '98 to '00 models. They have the smaller 200W amp. The '01 and '02 models have the larger 500W amp. Not sure if this is the same amp used in the Firebirds.

'94 pre-dates the Monsoon system by 3 or 4 years, so of course yours wouldn't have it. I'm not sure exactly which year the Monsoon System was introduced, but it goes back to at least '98. Might have been available in 97MysticZ's car.

The change to 500W was made in 2000. 98 and 99 had the 200W and 00 thru 02 had the 500W.

For Firebirds (at least from 2000 and up) the only models without Monsoon were the base coupes. Convertibles, Formulas and Trans Ams all came with Monsoon systems. I would imagine that Camaros were similarly equipped but I don't know about 98 and 99 models.

My understanding has always been that the amp was the same 98-02. Just games with including or not including the head unit power and playing around with what numbers they decided to use. The difference is in how the amp channels are used and what speakers they drive, which is why the pin-ins and outs are different.

The parts manual does list a different amp part number for 97 cars though. 97 was the only LT1 monsoon year.

But it is the same for all 98 up, and is $288 on GMpartsdirect

Nope. The 200W amp is physically smaller than the 500W. Could be that for replacement purposes, they only sell the 500W model. I am sure the pin-out is the same for both.

Yes, the part number in current parts manuals is the same from 98 thru 02 but it's quite likely that the parts were originally different and have been replaced with the updated version. In other words, the 200W amp is no longer available as a replacement part - the 500W amp replaces it.

Yes, all Monsoon models from 98-02 can use the 500W amp - it just plugs right in.

BTW, if you turn off your caps lock you won't get every word capitalized.
