No fuse between power wire and amp?

Always run a fuse, about a foot from the batery. You need to have it to prevent your amp from blowing, if there is a surge of any type it will toast the fuse and not the amp!

But there should be two. One under the engine bay closest to the battery. The other should be next to the equipment to protect the amp.
If something goes wrong, normally the amp will catch on fire and ultimately catch the car on fire. Technically, the fuse is to protect the amp.

Hopefully you've got enough feedback now to realize running without a fuse is very dumb.
The fuse should be as close as possible to the battery and be as close as possible (but not less than) the fuse rating of everything you are running. Anything up to 80 amps can be handled by a very inexpensive tube fuse holder.
You can also pick up circuit breakers to accomplish the same thing. They cost a little more but offer the convenience of never replacing a fuse and being able easily open the circuit if you're working on the wiring.
