Problem with JL Amp at high volume

Problem with JL Amp at high volume I just installed a JL Audio 500/1 amp pushing an Eclipse 12" SW7200 (500watt RMS). My problem is that everything works right until I start to turn up the volume on head unit. The sub is bumping good till I start to crank up the volume, then it cuts out, then back on when I lower the volume.
Anyone have any suggestions? Reading the manual, I think I need a better grounding point. I scraped to bare metal at the bottom of one of the studs for the t-top holder. Where has everyone else grounded their amps? My amp is on the rear deck.

try making you own ground ie. drill your own hole and use a self drill screw in one of the wheel wells first and then if it is still cutting out you need to run a seperate power wire on your wiring harness straight to your head unit ie. run like a 10-12 guage wire straight to your battery w/ a fuse..then to your fuse box or somethign that turns only when cars on then straight to your headunit red power on the harness instead of using the car stock power..sometimes it isnt big enough....i had the same problem

That amp will cut off if it detects clipping... you may have your settings off, try turning down the gain on the amp a little.
what he said, just cut back on the gain and it should fix it, if not then we need to look further. what is your gain setting at originally? Thread Starter

The gain is at its lowest right now (input sensitivity). I suspected it was that also, but even at the gain's lowest setting, it still cuts out at the same level when I turn it up.
I'm going to try and reground as recommended in the 2nd post, but I'm not too sure what he was talking about wiring directly to the head unit.

Well I re-did the grounding and improved the power wire connection at the battery terminal. I checked the glass fuse and did two different wiring configurations on the dual-voice coil sub (2 ohm / 8 ohm). Results are the same, no improvement. I think the amp may be bad 
I'll do more tests on Tuesday at a shop when I'm off.

Problem solved: it was the gain "input sensitivity" setting
I thought I had a problem with the gain being too high.....turns out it wasn't high enough. I had to turn down the sub-output on my head unit and turn up the gain on the amp, instead of turn it down, which I had been doing and had been advised to do. Now its bumpin!!!! and now the lights go dim
