I would try cleaning the contacts in the column as well, way before dropping almost a grand on what they want to do. Something like a stiff peice of paperboard with dipped in rubbing alchohol. Kinda like one of those old video game console cleaners - you know?
Most of the problems are due to dirt/build-up. I don't know if I've ever heard of a complete failure of the reader, and I'd just defeat the system way before paying that kind of coin. Sounds like someone is trying to take you for a ride.

I'm having the same problem too... my car wants to start but it wont. I already replaced the lock cylinder and got a new key (cause apparently mine was bad) but that didn't work and then thought it might have been the MAF sensor, turned it off but its not that either. A friend told me to check the relays... where would those be for the VATS? cause I've found just about everything but the VATS stuff on my car. But if it's not that then I need to figure out how to turn the VATS off for the time being.
