Default RPO for 500Watt Monsoon?

Already searched but apparently wasn't using the right terms. How do you know what Monsoon system you have? I have a 2001 Z28 with steering controls and obviously a monsoon deck. I have an RPO list printed but it isn't specific.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand the question. I thought there is only one version of the Monsoon system available in a given model year. Not counting options like whether you get the CD or cassette player or add the changer in the back.

If the question is whether your '01 Z has the Monsoon system or not, it's really an issue of whether you have an amplifier back near the spare tire.

No amp = no Monsoon

2001 and 2002 Monsoon equipped Camaros had the 500W amplifier, instead of the 200W used in earlier model years. I'm not sure if GM used the same 500W amplifier in both Camaro and Firebird setups.

Oh, sorry I thought there was a 200w or 500w. I have a monsoon deck but I will go out and check for the amp now. I wasn't sure if it had a specific RPO or not.

Couldn't really tell if the Amp was in there or not (I assume its not in the open...) I did find a black mounting plate in the tire well.

I also have the RPO UN0 - ETR 200watt Monsoon Sound System w/ CD Player. (I think the RPO list I have is old though)

Bose? I had that on my 1995 and it was pretty easy to tell.

All amps 98-02 are the same, same GM PN and everything. The 500 watt vs. 200 watt thing is marketing only.

There was a distinct amplifier for 97 systems. I am not sure of the details about what is different, but I can assure you 98 on ups are all the same, so if you are thinking maybe a factory amp upgrade was possible, it's not.

The Camaro RPO for Monsoon was UZ7. This covered the amp and speaker setup that was unique to Monsoon systems. The head units were specified separately - UL0 and UN0 for cassette and CD respectively. That's because the head units in Monsoon systems are really just ordinary extended-range Delco radios. The thing that makes it a Monsoon is the amp and speaker setup.

However, on Firebirds the codes were specified as complete Monsoon systems - W54 or W55 depending on whether cassette or CD head unit. Not that there is any major difference between the Firebird and Camaro setups but I guess it was easier to use one code for the system instead of separate codes for head unit and amp/speakers.

The replacement amplifiers listed in the parts manual are probably the same for all models and years. But I thought the 200W that was used in the '98 to '00 Camaros is physically smaller than the 500W model used in the Firebirds and '01 & '02 Camaros.

THANK YOU. I do have UZ7 and found the amp bracket (but the amp must be hidden behind that) ... Everywhere Ive looked said the 01 and 02 got a 500w amp instead of 200w but that doesn't matter much.

As far as upgrading the amp... not what i was thinking. I actually have a front speaker that blew out and I wanted to see if it was worth replacing the speaker or if I needed to redo the entire setup.

Thanks again!

how would that be marketing only? I could see that if the number of speakers changed. Is that the case?

I replaced all of my speakers with aftermarket ones, after blowing one of my door speakers.

My understanding of it has always been based upon just whatever numbers GM decided to use for marketing reasons. RMS vs. peak, including/not including head unit power, and so forth.

Backed up with the fact that there were no hardware changes, and you end up with marketing. Everything I have ever seen says the only distinct version of the amp was for 97.

I guess it goes to reason that they might be interchangeable, so it is possible that a 97 amp might find it's way in a car or two by accident as a replacement. But everyone I've ever seen in auctions / cars 98 on up has been the same.

I will admit to know the total truth we'd need someone from Delphi. GM part numbers, and service part / obselesence practices mean even the General won't really know the total answer.
