Default Speaker Help, Recommendations

Guys just got my new M6 98 camaro. Well most of my time is being consumed driving it and learning how to (had an auto since i was 17-now 21) shift better i noticed that i had two blown speakers. Im not an audiophile but i know a bit about audio. I put some infinity kappa components, l7 sub, and a kicker 1200 amp in my girls car and it sounds pretty good. I, personally dont like alot of thumpy bass and am more of a rocker then a hip-hop guy. THough i feel any decent system has to have good bass to sound good. I know that camaro doesnt have as good of a speaker setup as the firebird(or my g/f grand prix) but i wanted some opinions.

Im thinking of going with some Infinity reference 6.5" speakers for the front and rear. WIll sound way better then it does now and better then stock. I know infinities lack a bit of bass but sound very good. Can anyone recommend a different set of speakers? I can get these for about 125 for a set of 4.

My second question is, If the inifinites are my best choice (good speaker at a unbeatable price) do i need to get the shallow version of the speaker or will the regular size speaker fit? The shallow size is the Infinity Reference 6012si and the standard size is Infinity Reference 6012i. Can you use the shallow in the front and the standard in the back?

If you just upgrade the speakers to 6012i's, your midrange and treble clarity will be much, much, improved. The quality of the bass will be improved, but the overall volume level won't get a huge boost. Some people claim they have less than stock but I think they get their phases reversed or don't understand how the stock wiring is laid out.

All in all, the 6012i's are a very safe choice. Considering the price you are doing pretty well with them.

However, I just recently put 652.7i's in my doors. From internet vendors they are nominally more expensive ($10 in my case) and are a 6.75" speaker. They have better power handling and sensitivity - the woofer is just a little bigger. But they also use an external crossover which I can't say I'm positive you could bi-amp with the monsoon setup. However if you see yourself going to an aftermarket amp I think they are a better choice. Especially if you have no subs in your plans and want the most bass you can get out of the 6.5" locations. Four of these with about 75-100watts per channel in a coupe would sound very good, lacking only the very deep bass subs are made for.

Realize that the factory head unit is a real roadblock to good sound. At medium to high volumes it is putting a lot of distortion out to the amp. If upgrading the speakers is a 5 point upgrade to sound quality overall, upgrading the head unit is a 5 point upgrade to sound quality at high volume levels. The monsoon amp is actually pretty strong (relative to a head unit amp), but the deck can't send it a clean signal.

In other words the best advice I can give you is to lay out your entire system plan before moving ahead with anything. What makes the most sense depends alot upon what you intend to replace, if you want subs, etc.

Thanks for the info. I DOnt have the monsoon system so i dont have to worry about the speaker ohms or a seperate amp, correct? So the the normal depth speaker will work or do i have to go with the shallow version?

I don't think the shallow mounts are necessary. I know the 652.7i's fit in the doors. I don't have a coupe but I think the back would be fine as well. Go through the configurator at Crutchfield to check fitments.

Are you sure you don't have the monsoon? No insult but there isn't a monsoon logo or anything in Camaros. You have NO amp in the tire well, right?

If you truly do have a base stereo then the install is cake, cuz there's only 2 wires at each speaker and they come right off the head unit. If I was in that situation, not wanting subs, I'd take a long look at the new Panasonic units with the digital amps in them. Something like 30 watts rms, nice and clean with no amp or wiring hassles.
