Default Monsoon Head Unit to Alpine CDA-9851

This may sound like a dumb question, but will this aftermarket head unit be better than my factory monsoon head unit? I've heard before that the monsoon head units have an internal amplifier needed to supply the power to the speakers, but will the alipine head unit be an overall better head unit?

There is nothing special about the monsoon H/U. You will be much better off with your new H/U. I bet the sound improves just from the swap.

I noticed a SLIGHT improvement in clearity. The biggest improvement is to just rewire the system and get some upgraded speakers to with the new HU.

I would also rather get the alpine 9856 for IPOD fullspeed alone.

yeah I don't use my iPod that much so oh well. I'm getting this head unit pretty much brand new for $100. I already have Pioneer 220watt 4way speakers so I'm expecting this headunit to improve the output of the speakers a lot

4ohm pioneer mids in place of your 2ohm monsoon speakers?

If so you will notice a major difference if you rewire them.

What exactly needs to be rewired? And yes I know the monsoon HU only outputs 2 ohms so how do I "rewire" this new head unit to output 4?

you are doubling the resistance therefor losing ALOT of volume.

basicaly dissconnect your amp, and run new wires from the speakers to the deck. Make sure you run atleast a 16gauge incase you deside to amp them later on.

Actually, there's no need to rewire just because of the impedance of the speakers. The Monsoon amp can handle 4-ohm speakers without difficulty although you may notice a reduction in volume depending on the efficiency of your replacement speakers.

The thing that causes more problems is the filtering done by the amp. The sail panel speakers only get low frequency signal from the amp so there isn't much point in putting full-range (coax, 3-way, etc.) speakers there unless you rewire them directly to the head unit. On the other hand, some good aftermarket 6.5S subs or mid-bass speakers mounted there can sound pretty good.

there seems to be a lot of debate on the actual ohm rating of the stock speakers...

I know in my WS6, the sailpanel subs are definitely 4ohm+4ohm DVC... and I've read on the Houston F-Body Monsoon wiring website that the front components and hatch components are 4 ohm in all Firebirds..

There is some confusion because Camaros and Firebirds are wired differently.

Firebird coupes have ten speaker elements. The doors have 6.5S (oversize) mid-range speakers running at 2-ohms off the amp and .75" tweeters running at 4-ohms off the head unit. The sail panels have 6.5S dual voice coil 4-ohm subs wired in parallel to produce a 2-ohm load for the amp. The hatch has 4" mid-range speakers running at 4-ohms off the amp and .75" tweeters running at 4-ohms off the head unit.

Camaro coupes have eight speaker elements and they all run off the amp. The doors have 2-ohm 6.5S mids and 4-ohm tweeters mounted coaxially but wired as components. The sail panels have 6.5S subs running at 2-ohms and the hatch has 4" extended range speakers running at 4-ohms.

Convertibles are wired similarly to Camaro coupes (all speakers run off the amp) but the speakers are physically different of course.

Someone on LS1.com supposedly investigated all the wiring on his WS6 and found it to match up to the diagrams floating around the internet... that is, that the amp powers everything... even the tweeters...

No, I read that post...someone on LS1.COM said that they checked their Camaro and it matched the diagrams (including all speakers running off the amp). I can tell you from first-hand experience that Firebird tweeters run off the head unit just as the schematics in the service manual indicate.
