Default No monsoon amp??

Hello, My 1998 SS was listed as having the monsoon factory stereo and that is what it says on the head unit, however, there is no amp in the rear as stated in the FAQ's. The rear spearker wire run in a wiring loom toward the front of the car. Do some monsoon systems have no amp and run strickly off the head unit at 4ohms? thanks much.

No, the Monsoon system, by definition, always has an amp. The head unit of a Monsoon system is just an ordinary Delco radio with an extra sticker on it. It's the amp and speaker setup that makes it a Monsoon system. You should find the amp attached to a plastic bracket in the right hatch area near the spare tire. It is mounted vertically so you actually see the back of the amp.

If you can't find the amp you should look for the UZ7 option code on your door to confirm that the car came with Monsoon. It's possible that a previous owner changed the system.

I had the same thing with my car. It came with the tape deck and the 12 disc changer. The headunit says Monsoon on it but there's no amp. It's not a big deal considering I don't even have the stock wiring anymore but I guess there might be two different levels of Monsoon?

Yeah, there was a 250watt, and a 500watt Monsoon system, I thought both got amps though.

Yes, the Monsoon system always has an amp - it's not a Monsoon system without it.

There were two different amps used. The 97 models (the first year of Monsoon usage) had an amp that was physically smaller than later models and was rated at 250 watts. The larger amp was used in 98 and newer models but was rated at 250 watts until 2000 when they started publishing the 500 watt peak rating in brochures (same amp just different ratings).

If you don't know what you are looking for, you can easily not see the amp. I had the cover over my spare tire off like 3 times and I never saw the amp until the one day that I actually searched for it. Its mounted on the back of a piece of plastic so just feel behind there or unbolt it to see it.

Threre is a empty square where I think the amp would be mounted next to the alarm sensor. I put a new head unit in yesterday and all the speaker wires ran to the factory head unit the says monsoon. I even called my gm tech freind and he did a GM vin search and my can is listed as having the monsoon option, weird. I'm going to replace the speakers anyway so I guess its just less work for me without the amp.

Just how "dirty" are the Monsoon amps, at these power ratings?? (Since everyone says they are pure $h!t.) >3 or 4% THD??
