Pioneer Premier DEH-P480MP Head unit
Two P2 12" Rockford Fosgate Sub in the back
P5002 Amplifier (500wat 2-channel amp) -may have gotten the amp wrong so many of them on the site, and can't remember the exact one
Putting 6x9's where the factory 4" are in the back
putting 6.5 rockford fosgates in the rest.
The price for all of it is $780 tax & all:
$200 for both of the subs
$230 for amp
$170 for HU
$140 for box
$30 for wiring harness
Am I making a dumb move, or was I right in this being a good deal?
I figure adding ~15-20% is reasonable for the convenience of buying stuff locally with a shop that will support you. Although some internet vendors are very good, you still have to wait for shipping and deal with return shipping/restocks if something doesn't work out. And that is if you get a good vendor that supports post sale. I personally buy almost 100% online, but there are no good shops around me, I am very cheap, and I do my own install work.
Bump that number up to maybe +40-50% to compensate for local buy and istallation, if not more. Head unit and amp running in our cars is very simple, so there is no real reason for price gouging on installation. Some places try to claim the monsoon system ruins the car, makes it difficult to re-wire, but this is not true.
If you are flexible, a lot of money can be saved buying amps and enclosures used, and both are fairly easy to find both locally and through ebay or whatever. Some flexibility here can result in huge savings. Amps tend to work or not, and boxes, people dump all the time for very low prices.
I would not recommend buying used speakers (wear) or head units (lots of complexity, good item to have warranty on).
Many people would recommend different subs and 6.5" drivers all around. Rockford is not the "safe bet" it once was. Running two 12" subs I would think you'd want your 6.5"s to be amplified as well, but that is my opinion and some people are happy with head unit power and amped subs.
6x9's would be pointless, there is no enclosure to work with back there. If you really think you need more rear fill and midrange/treble, then just put another 4" coaxial back there. Totally unnecessary, though. 4x quality 6.5"s with good power is enough.
