Installing amp after stock amp?

Installing amp after stock amp?
has anyone done this with success? I just installed a pair of 12" subs and an amp. To power them I used a line converter at the back seat speakers to provide RCA inputs. Things were ok at low volumes, but when you hit the moderate to high volumes the amp started to burn up until it finally quit. I assumed it was because it was an older generic no name radio shack amp. I since replaced it with different amp, though its a couple years old, I know it works fine since it was in my Bro's S-10. Same thin, low volumes its fine. I cranked it up and after about 5 mins I could start smelling something like melted rubber or plastic so I shut it down. It still runs but I keep the volume down.
Could this be because the input signal is already amplified? I was told that I shouldnt have any problems since the stock amp is a piece of crap and it only does like 20w x channel which wont cause any problems.

UNPLUG IT IMMEDIATELY!!! i did the same thing.. ran the amp (600w RF) after my monsoon amp, used a line converter on the rear speakers.. i blew the sub.. yes it only works at low volume.. now.. do this.. grab a pac oem-1 or splice directly into the harness (i went into the harness)... then run that line converter and run the RCA's to your amp.. talk about a world of a difference... it's worth the extra time.. and you won't smoke amps/subs!
