Default What gauge wire should I use for??

What gauge wire should I use for hooking up a trans brake, activation button and arming switch, Harlan 2 step and general automobile wiring? I have several spools of 16 gauge wire and I want to use them.

A friend of mine said I should use 12 gauge wire. I said why? The wire that comes with the momentary switch is 18 gauge at best and the wire on the trans brake is even smaller. 12 gauge seems so thick.

TIA
Tom

im sure the 16 guage wire would work just fine, yes 12 guage is rather large. get a few more replies before you trust my word completely though, i know a little about wiring, but im no rocket scientist.
