Default Double-Din Write Up

So after some time and many request I did a write up on my double-din installation. Well because of this I decided to redo the whole thing and take pictures of it, it turned out even better, IMO. So here it is....

Head Unit: Pioneer AVIC-D1 Navigation Unit

1. Had to clean out the plastic that was getting in the way and put some wood for the new support structure for the HU. Also had to relocate the HVAC controls to the glove box. Look at all the wires!

2. Fabricated a new trim piece out of some 1/4" plywood. I traced the old trim piece to make the shape and then cut out the area for the HU and in the future a DVD player.

3. Used a piece of ABS plastic to cover over the wood and placed the HU mount into the space. I trimed off the top of the mount to make a little more space.

4. Inserted HU and screwed it... to the mount.

5. Carefully lifted up on the ABS sheet and used a dremel to make a indent on either side so that the screw would remain flush. The screw is going into the wooden pieces as shown in #1. (HU us HEAVY so I could not just use the orginal metal clips)

6. Lastly I used double sided tape to secure down the ABS sheet. Finished, and of course awaiting my new DVD player.

Tell me what you think.

Yeah kinda did it a little different... I assume if you wanted to keep the hvac controls there all you would have to do is make a bigger square for them to fit in instead of a DVD player.

Yea, could you have left the AC controls there, shave them down or something?

The HVAC controls could still go there, but it would be a very, very tight fit. When I had the controls there if you look in my interior post the HU was pretty much sitting on top of the controls and the bottom of the radio area, in other words you would have to find another way to secure the controls because once it is dropped the holes on the hvac controls will not line up.

Excellent job!

I assume you're gonna put the HVAC in the glovebox?

Nice write up and something below the HU would be a good idea.

If you look back at the pics, I said that I am adding a DVD player in the slot cut out in the wood.

2. Fabricated a new trim piece out of some 1/4" plywood. I traced the old trim piece to make the shape and then cut out the area for the HU and in the future a DVD player.

I don't like it at all....it looks funny because its missing the hvac and it looks like its to far up. Since that Double Din doesn't play dvds why not put the hvac were it came stock and a dvd player under your seat somehow or a slim ps2 in the glove box? I myself did a double din install and kept my Hvac controls right there. I actually didn't have to touch the hvac controls and everything fit perfect without really moving anything, just had to make custom brackets to mount it which was a pita, but well worth it. Pics of mine finished are in my sig.

Yeah that is how I orginally had mine... I did not like it. Today I got my DVD player and put it under the HU... looks sweet! Will post pics sunday maybe.

u had yours like mine originally or you had the dvd player under your seat originally? I like the way mine is. I think their is really no way u can fiberglass it all evenly with the hvac controls beneath it which really sucks and I didn't like the idea of having the sides of the hu fiberglassed and the bottom not, so I left it like it is and am happy with it so far.

nice work, when you have the HVAC controls on, disassemble it and sand that panel down and paint it to match the interior. custom is the way to go. im thinking of fabing a double din into my 93, but maybe when im more finacially able.
