Default Will the stock head unit still function without the faceplate attached?

I'm curretnly putting a 7" touchscreen in my dash and not having the faceplate on the stock headunit might give me just enough room to make it happen.

So... will it work without it? I'd rather not try it myself just because I'm unsure of the consequences.

I thought about it but that's a last resort option.

I think the HU can be tilted up and pushed back enough to get a LCD screen in there. It has been done before.
