Default Headlight Switch

I own a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am and when I turn on just the fog lights and parking lights the headlights come up as well, but they are not on. Someone told me that I have a bad headlight switch, Are they right? Where can I get one?

It's remotely possible that it's the switch but it's more likely a stripped gear in one or both of the headlight motors. Do you hear a grinding sound when you turn the headlights on or off? This is a fairly common problem on Firebirds and it has a variety of symptoms such as what you're experiencing or having the headlights pop up and down when arming the alarm system.

Yeah, When I turn the headlight off it makes a grinding sound. Someone suggested bying a rebuilding kit from like Rodney Dickman or something. That is $70 to fix both of them. So if I buy the kit to fix them that will keep the headlights from popping up when just the foglights are on?

You don't want to replace the original gears with more plastic ones - they'll just strip again. You can buy brass replacement gears that should last forever. Brass gears and instructions are available here.

The gears that are on that site are brass gears, so is that what I should get?
