Default Whine in speakers

I have a 2001 Camaro SS with the factory 6 speaker Monsoon radio that has picked up a whining noise in the rear hatch speakers. It gets more pronounced the longer I drive the car.It sounds like alternator noise but it happens with the radio on or off and is not effected by the volume.Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

that normally means it is a loose ground. do you by chance have any aftermarket ignition? If you do then you need to put a resistor in it somewhere. I dont know exactly but i know msd sends them and they give directions on where.

Everything is stock except for torque converter. Do you think it is a bad ground at the head unit or the amplifier? If I pull the fuse to the radio will that take the power off the amp?

Ed

PS: nothing has ever been touched inside the car

Not using one common ground can cause this. I actually ran a ground from my HU all the way to the back where the amps are grounded. Not having a common ground for all your stereo gear is a sure fire way to get alternator whine. Even in the facory system.

having more than one ground paths that are unequal can cause what is called a ground loop, which is the most common cause of noise. but that if you ground one part to a good ground and then use another ground at a secondary source like a trunk panel or something not directly to chassis it can cause noise, you can fix problems like this with a ground loop isolator or in your case just fix it by relocating the ground points.....however i would avoid running a ground the length of the car, because a ground wire always needs to be short....just find a good location directly on the chassis somewhere and strip the paint back with a metal cleaner and make a new ground. if you locate the poor ground if that is indeed the problem. you can also get noise through high level signal output ran next to power wires this happends alot near the amps. so you might check that also

My question is how can the speakers pick up noise when the radio is off.

They shouldn't be...I too had a nice whine for a while with my factory system when I had a sub. Someone recommended that I run the signal wires and power wires down opposite sides of the car. I did that when I put in my new system, and it hasn't given me a bit of grief. The head unit has its own ground close to the front of the car, and the amps share a ground in the rear. Power runs down the passenger side, signal wires run down the driver's side.

Probably not the right answer, as I could have stumbled on not having a whine for some other reason unknown to me.
