Default Quick Amp/Sub RMS question...

im looking at a sub that has:
Peak Power Handling 600 watts approx.
RMS Power Handling 300 watts

do i need an amp with 600w rms or will 300 do? or maybe 4-500?

personally i would match the RMS levels from sub to amp. If your putting 2 300w RMS subs then i would go with a 600w RMS amp. if only one 300w RMS sub then an amp that is 300w RMS. You can add a bigger amp but then it will take away some of the life from the sub

so i shouldnt look at the peak rms of the sub when picking the amp? so if i get that one with 300rms, and 600 at peak... i should still get a 300rms amp?

thx

correct...(generally)

also, "peak rms" is contradictory... peak power was the term you were looking for.

I agree in general. I WOULD however still look at them, just don't pay attention to them. I have seen discount sites that have peak AND rms powers the SAME.... so which one is right? you don't know...since it was a simple error in typing or someone decided that RMS power was the peak divided by n-channels, or whatever (or they could simply multiply RMS values for peak for some reason). I ended up checking at another site because I was curious, and it turned out that the peak power was correct...meaning the actual continuous power ratings were much lower than advertised.

when i got my 15" Kicker L7..its rated at 1000w rms and 2000peak i think? and so i bought a 1600w rms amp..giving it all clean power..not dirty..something you would do with a low powered amp..turn the gain up and all that crap..makes the signal dirty..so with my amp i got it all turned down and i dont have to worry about breakin a thing because my subs gettin clean power...thats what really matters IMO
