Best radar detector under $200...slow down.

Seriously, there are a number of radar detectors in that price range that will warn you early enough. The difference between them and better (more expensive) detectors is how selective they are. You may say you don't care about false alarms but when they become numerous you tend to ignore them - and that's when you'll get tagged by a radar trap you don't expect.

If you buy one of the less expensive ones, stick with the same brands that are known for the higher end models - Escort and Bel are good choices. Whistler is so-so. Cobra isn't too good. Avoid Phazer at all cost.

Also, are there detectors that can go off through your stereo or do you just have to turn the music down?

got my 'red' Escort X50 new from ebay for $225 + shipping. That's close enough to your price range, that you better just spend the extra IMO.

$246.95+ $29.95 for blue

If you can't go over 200 check out ebay or try to find a used one in your price range. I have an Escort 8500 X50 and its a good detector. With the new Escort 9500 coming out there might be more of them on ebay.

I based that comment partly on reviews I've read (it's only an average performer) but mostly on their false/misleading advertising of having a legal, effective radar jammer.

Just remember, if your gonna go the battery route... batteries drain, so does the range of your radar detector.
