there is a sensor type plug on the back of the alternator, what is this? im swapping in an ls1 in my jeep and im using the voltage guage from my jeeps cluster.
on the jeep there is a positive wire, and a negative wire. how can i convert it to use it on the ls1 alternator
the plug on the back is the part that is stumping me, is this where the positive terminal is?

Are you talking about the 4 pin weatherpack type plug that only has 1 wire going to it? If you are it is the charge indicator control. It does need to be hooked up for the alt to function. If you are using the LS1 wiring harness there should already be a plug for it. If your using a carb check out post 13 in the FAQ sticky of the conversions and hybrids forum, theres a link on how to hook up LS1 alternators without using the PCM.
