Default New to the FBody world & have ?'s

I just brought home a 00 SS Convert and the stereo is terrible.

I have started looking at routes to upgrade the system. One shop will build a box in place of the spare tire for $210 to fit a 10" sub, another shop tells me one 10" is not enough in a convertible and wants to build a box that would fill the bottom section of the trunk and supply room also for an amp.

First shop quote without the sub.... CF XP6004 amp for 399 box 210, plus the cost of a sub, I already have purchased 2 10" CF subs for my TBird and we talked about using one of them.

Second shop quote was 1050 for the amp($599) and subs and box. The amp was a Boston 5 channel for later upgrade and 2 10" subs and the box.

I have one 10" in my olds cutlass convert and it doesn't seem that bad, but I don't have anything to compare it with....

I am thinking and talked with the second shop about upgrading the whole system and the out the door quote was $2,600 that is a ken wood 2 din deck with blue-tooth and ipod and steering control, separates in the front and coax in the back.... lots

Thanks for any help

Do you know anyone that would be willing to help you with the install?

Well, to be honest the install stuff doesn't worry me much, but the custom box, etc... is where I start to wonder. And wether just one very good top quality 10" sub wouldn't be enough.

I was looking at using the Valor DTS660WT 6.5" Double DIN IN Dash Touch Screen deck, looked really nice and full featured to me. Where the decks they are talking about locally are running $1,200 the Valor has all the same stuff and more it seems for almost half the cost.

And the custom work on the dash bezel intimidates me somewhat, but I have don't lots of other fab type work on both the Cutlass and the TBird so... but that stuff wasn't as right in your face as the dash is...

FWIW here is a pic of the new ride, picked it up Saturday.

DAMN - sweet....

after seeing that........its going to draw a lot of attention...

IMO, stay away from the double din and consider something where the faceplate can be removed.....you may park with the top down one day even briefly and be surprised -- even covered - 'verts are easier targets....

I wouldn't worry about custom boxes -- look into subthump's stealth setups; as for prices, have you compared them to any online retailers like SonicElectronox.com, OnlineCarStereo.com, etc??

EDIT: any more pics?

Regarding Pics, yes I have alot, I posted them in the Convertible section....

Regarding the subs, any opinions if I need two 10's or just one?

Well, this was what I was thinking from an online place.

Valor double Din deck, Alpine SPR-17C for the rear and Alpine SPR-17S for the front, Phonex Gold RSD-1200.1 for the sub/subs, and a Phoenix Gold RSD300.4 for the fronts. I was also looking at some 5 channel amps also...

I had assumed that the double din was also removable?

honestly, i would recommend keeping the stock deck. use the JL audio cleansweep to integrate amps with that deck. itll keep the stock look and keep thieves away.

i would then avoid a 5 channel amp. if you are only getting a sub for now, then get the sub and amp properly matched, then get a 2 or 4 channel amp when you get speakers.

thats almost EXACTLY what i plan to do, build it one piece at a time, and go all high end. Im using dynaudio from components, eD rear 7" subs (these are already in) and a single 12" sub (either eclipse or another mid to upper end brand) and then a 4 channel and a 1 channel.

BTW very nice car. i like the SE graphics on the 00. any plans to get the SE wheels for it?

Check out the link in my sig...... or more pics in this thread.

IMO, a big box in the bottom of the trunk that leaves no cargo space w/ a pair of 12"s is the only way to get maximum SPLs (short of giving up the back seat and putting the sub box there). BUT, you give up the trunk and you waste alot of $$ buying subs and amps just to mainly rattle the deck lid in order to get some bass in the passenger compartment. A single 10" stealth in the wheel well keeps the trunk volume, but you give up the spare tire and still most of the power rattles the deck lid before it gets to the passenger compartment.

Thanks fast01z28, I am trying to decide which wheels to run, the current wheels are very nice, but I want to run something not so bright and I hope with some lip on them. I saw at a friends house a WS6 with stealth grey Z06 wheels on it and really like the look of the wheels... I posted a photo of it with my car in the convt section.

Also Thanks JohnnyB, I like the looks of your box and really don't want to lose my trunk, what there is of it anyway. I sent you a pm about it...

Thanks all for your help.
