Question is a 200 amp alternator overkill??

i plan on running lots of electrical assecories (about 10 nexus gauges, 200 watt sub (yeah i know it's small), electronically controlled air suspension, nitrous and boost controllers, two external cooling systems (one for the trans and one for the diff - each has a 12v pump and heat exchanger w/ fan) cut outs, and a bunch of other little goodies)...whatdo you think?

200 amps are great! But I hear they work like stock at idle, its until you get the rpms a little over 1200 when they work.

i say its overkill. You should be fine in the 160-180amp range. Add up the amperage from all the extra accessories and find one suitable for your needs.

Maybe on a cheap, POS alternator. Mine puts out over 100 amps at idle.

I always wondered if it didn't take more power to turn a bigger amp alternator? Would you gain or lose power depending on increasing or decreasing from 160 to a 200 amp alt?

It all depends on the pulley. Mine is a direct replacement... didn't gain or lose any engine power, just gained electrical power

So basically get the biggest amp alternator with a stock pulley size and you'll lose nothing? Seems win win to me.

Honestly, even if the pulley were smaller I don't think it sucks up that much power. I think the crank pulley is the one that matters most.
