I now have two 8" ID's in a 1ft^3 sealed box running at 2 ohms @ 600WRMS. I'm pretty happy with them, though I'm not that happy with their low end and I would like some more output. My first plan was to try two ID8's and see if I was happy with them, then if I wasn't I would add 2 more, put them all in a 1.6-1.8ft^3 sealed box and run the amp down to 1 ohm to give them 1000WRMS. Though now I am thinking of selling them and getting one 12" Fi Q. I will put it in a 1.3ft^3 sealed fiberglass box and give it 1000WRMS. What are your thoughts?

Also with going with the one 12" sub, I would free up a lot of room in the trunk...

I think you kinda answered your own question on this one!! You can keep adding 8" subs till you fill your car up but it would be easier and take up less space to get the same low end from a larger sub. It can be done with an 8" sub but it would take a ported enclosure with more air space volume. I'd go with the Fi or a DD for that matter. Either way it should work well with 1.3ft^3 of airspace sealed. If you have room a ported enclosure would probably gain a little more as well.

Does he have enough trunk for that though?? That was my consideration. GTO's have the damn gas tank right there in between the trunk and the rear seat. Takes up more room than I thought when I saw one for the first time.

4-8 have more surface area than one 12 and if you port the the box right it would play just as low

^^ yup. Playing low has to do with moving enough air, not really individual speaker cone size.
Plus ported boxes, when built right, can have awesome SQ too. The IDs actually work very well in ported boxes.

A long time ago, I heard this camaro that was sounding really sweet, and it was LOUD. I went and checked it out and it had 4 ported JL 8"s running off 800WRMS. The box took up half of the T-top area in the hatch, but it sounded really sweet. Four 8"s does have more cone area than a single 12" and everything being the same (brand, tuning, power) should be louder.

I decided on one 12" Fi Q. I need the trunk space. It's in a 1.4ft^3 sealed box now and I'm happy with it. Doing a fiberglass box this or next weekend and it will go in the passanger side of the trunk to free up some more space.

The 8s would have the dominance in Cone Area, but if you're front stage is up to par, the Q will give you the desired sound you want with stronger audible output for the low frequencies.

Also, I use FI, so I'm slightly biased

Q12 EASILY wins in displacement. It's not all about cone surface area, it's also about Xmax. Don't even CONSIDER the 8s (any more than you have so far)

Edit: Also, ID motors are very out of date. They're still a good sub but they just can't compete with linear stroke the way XBL^2, Ascendant/Fi, TC Sounds/Soundsplinter/Eclipse and others do.

XBL^2 is not used Fi or RE or Ascendant Audio anymore. RE was bought out by US Amps, and no longer sells direct anymore unless it's to competitors. Scott and David split ways and Scott now owns Fi, and does all the development and maching for Chad of Ascendant Audio. The newly released Ascendant Audio Assasins are actually rebadged Fi X's.

TC SOunds is a different story. Some of the shittiest customer service from Thilo and Kyle. Complete Idiots. Only TC Sounds affiliated product that will ever touch my vehicle would be anything from the Sound Splinter Line. Mike is one of the best business owners in the audio world I have ever had the priviledge to meet.

I never said they used it, but they use their own technology. AA Havocs have 30mm Xmax.

My TC speakers were packaged beautifully. I think you've just had a bad experience, doesn't mean they're a bad company.

AA used to use XBL^2 back with the Avalanche, but not with their previous line of speakers or their current line.
And the ID8s have always had 15mm of xmax

Overall the ID8's would have had alittle more output than the Fi Q. Though honestly I'm happier with the Fi Q than the two ID8's I had. Much better low end, it gets pretty loud and to me sounds better.

I started out not going for something great. I've done 2 big systems in my last vehicles and not really looking to do another. Though of course with this system I don't have $4000 to spend like I did with the others. My goal was just to get something better than stock with some bass.

The front stage is lacking, just some cheaper JBL components. When I get the extra money I'll upgrade to some BA Z6's or SPZ60's... though that will be a ways off. I still need an aftermarket HU. I'm thinking of going with the Eclipse CD7000, for the reason they seem to still make quality HU's with a lot of features. Plus from what I understand they have built in steering wheel controls, which I'm hoping will work with the GTO?
