I bought mine around the time they FIRST came out.. It's the "thick" model . Come to think of it, I should go ahead and buy the discreet display..

The new is passport 9500i is pretty sweet, it also outperforms the the v1 along with its predecessor the 8500. Check out www.radartest.com, there is alot of good info there.

I have an X50. I don't like it. Wish I went for the V1.

IMO, I guess the V1 is STILL the king. Even though I did check out radartest.com or whatever was posted ^^^^^ and the Bel supposedly beat out the V1 in KA band distance.... hmmm...

It's been discussed over and over. The Escort 8500+ series and Valentine detectors are the top performers. The performance between these two has been tested and is extremely similar. Your decision should be based on the features alone. Among other differences, the newer Escort uses GPS to save and eliminate locations of false alarms and warn of speed traps, and Valentine shows the direction where the radar originated.

Either is a good choice, and no, a good radar detector is not a waste of money.

Personally, I own a newer Escort Model. The Valentine's ability to locate the origin of the radar is a neat gimmick, but I am slowing down regardless.

Well I agree with everything you said up to the arrows being a "gimmick". They work very well and I love not having to look all over the place to locate the cop. The arrows don't lie and aren't inaccurate. In fact, when a cop is "gunning" the front of my car, the front arrow lights up, and when he passes my car, and still gunning, the rear arrow lights up. The side arrows aren't that great but front and back are very accurate.

Yes, that was just my humble opinion. My own conclusion was that I would have fun checking the arrows, but I am slowing down for any warning, and the origin isn't important to me.

My point is simply that everyone should form there own opinions about the extra features, and shouldn't decide based on performance.

Definitely! I LOVE that the GPS detects and remembers false alarms in a particular location. Besides that feature, IMO, the others are garbage. Functionality is key when deciding on a radar. ie. some radars talk to you - wow, those are now considered crap. some have multicolored lighting, whoopty doo. features don't matter unless they are functional and improve the radar in some way. Colors and voice are just useless..

PS: is that you in your sig?

off the topic really quickly. Just got a nice "88 on a 50mph" ticket. Is their a difference between a V1.8 and a V1 ? Just my quick .02. These things are really subjective to each users own preference really. Some additional features might not even be considered useful to others, so let it be. Thanks guys.

well, the V1 is great and i know a lot of people have them...but from looking at the tests, the BEL STi out performs it and filters false readings better...and they're both priced similarly...so i think I'm asking for the STi for xmas...
