was at a home improvement store and saw an ashalt based non granular roofing product. its a 3' x 50' foot roll with adhesive on the back and seems pretty damn pliable. its like an ice and water barrier that goes under the singles. just curious?

Please don't. It will melt, emmit a horrible ordor that will stick in your car for the rest of it's life. Than it will turn to ooze and seep up through the carpet and fuse it to the car.

i have to ask this then. pondering on what you have said. i have a black roof(home) and i know it has a simular product on it arount all the edges. how come i dont see that that oozing from under the one layer of shingles? im trust making sure we are talking of the same thing. what i was looking at was (owenscorning.com) weather lock non granular. have you used this before and seen this damage?
im not trying to discredit you, im just trying to understand. sounds like you got a good deal of experience in the audio realm where im a newbie.
thanks

I own a roofing company and use ice guard daily.I would use something else for sound deadening.Your car will smell like asphalt forever and I doubt you would get much sound deadening.

I'm not totaly sure if we're talking about the same stuff, but than again it's all pretty much the same. When you look at a roof with this stuff on it, you in general see the edges where the combination of getting wet, drying out, mixed with air and sun light, the stuff usually hardens up. Going in further to the center of the roof, you have the shingels themselves deflecting the heat away from the tar paper. Keeping the melting from occuring. Now in a car. You have that exhaust system, cats, tranny, engine, all creating alot of heat, that will rise up into the bottom of your car baking the tar paper. The factory carpet with all of the insulating stuff will trap that heat between the tar paper and the car metal. very little air gets in there to harden up the parper, so it will cook up like an oven.

I went through link jumps on LS1.com on the electontics section about the Jiffy **** Seal stuff from Home Depot...if you look at the sound deadening topics you'll find it.
In short - that asphalat stuff is heavy, smelly, doesn't ooz out. WORKS EXCELLENT. (jiffy **** seal ****)

Bought FatMat. it does smell like asphalt, have not installed due to odor, the manufacturer states the smell will fade within a couple of weeks. Very concerned.

I just finished installing it on my truck and it did smell for a while. Now the oder is gone. I left my truck with the doors and windows open for a while and it seemed to work.

We have a sound deadener sponsor on this site, their prices are very affordable. I bought a kit for my 69 Camaro and the stuff looks great:

I bought the stuff that has one side like tar looking and the other side like metal and it is wondeful/cheap and DOES NOT SMELL! I have a cut out that used to rattle whole car and I put this stuff under my carpet and NO MORE.
