Dimensions of the headunit?

Head units are sized using standards from DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung - the German Institute for Standardization). Most aftermarket head units are single DIN (178mm x 53mm or about 7" x 2"). Many newer vehicles now have double DIN head units (178mm x 106mm or about 7" by 4"). Our cars have 1.5 DIN (3" tall) head units. This size was exclusive to GM and Chrysler products during the 80s and 90s and there are a few aftermarket 1.5 DIN units available (Pioneer makes a couple). Mostly, people install single DIN units using an adapter face plate to fill up the extra space.

I had to look up the actual metric sizes and the meaning of the DIN acronym. The rest I was familiar with because my work involves a lot of different standards organizations (DIN, ISO, IEEE, and several others).
thanks whitebird, i've heard of the DIN talk before, but i didnt realize it was in reference to the actual size of the faceplate. maybe cause DIN sounds like PIN... those things that connect stuff in the back with connectors. haha
