Default Aftermarket deck with Monsoon... problems

I am getting ready to remove the monsoon system and replace it with new speakers and amps but that won't be until next month. For now, I installed an Alpine 9811 CD player and I am having a few problems. First off, I am getting terribly RPM whine through the deck. I can hear it through the speakers. Second, whenever the deck is turned on the speakers click, even when the volume is turned all the way down. It is really annoying.

Is this stuff happening because of the Monsoon amp because someone told me that they installed a new deck with their monsoon system and the sound was barely affected with none of these problems. However, I have a 2000 SS and he has a 98 Firebird WS6. I don't know if they are different but don't they have 8 speakers and me 6?

Off topic, my girlfriend has the Pioneer 6500 and can control her subwoofer hz and loudness level independently from the in-car speakers. I have a subwoofer loudness control but I can't control the hz independently from the in-car speakers. If I add bass to the in-car speakers then the sub gets louder. I want the sub to hit harder but it makes my in-car speakers distort. And yes, the sub is hooked up with a Monster MicroXLN 5m RCA to the 4-volt sub preout.

Also off topic and in abother thread... I'm torn between the JL Audio and Alpine V12 amps. Which is better and why? This is what I am using them with.

Alpine 9811 MP3/CD player.
Boston Acoustic Pro Series 6.5x componets
Boston Acoustic Neo-mag 6x9's (dual soft-dome tweets)
Alpine 12" Type-R

And which would hit harder with the right kind of power, a 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch HX2 or the 12" Alpine Type-R.

I can do the Aline MRD-M500 (500w x 1 at 2ohms) with the Alpine Type-R OR a Rockford Fosgate Power 1001bd (1000w x 1 at 2ohms) with a Punch HX2 for the same price.

First off let me say that I have been "into" car audio for 15 years, and during this time, a lot has changed.

I believe that the Alpine 9813 has more bass level and output controls for customizing and "tweaking" the sound. Alpine calls it Bass Engine Pro... it allows you to cross over the speakers powered from the deck.

WHO INSTALLED THIS? If your power wires and rca are run down the same side of the car (together), that can cause the noise you mentioned. Also, I don't normally recommend that you use the factory amps when changing the head unit. Bypass the factory amps and run directly to your new speakers. Also, if you really want the system to sound good, consider a seperate amp for your front & rear speakers, as well as an amp for your subs. It is just a matter of how far you want to go with this setup.

In response to your amp/speaker questions. It's mainly a matter of PERSONAL taste...different people like different speaker and amp combinations. I would personally go with JL amps (JL5001) and JL Speakers (12W3v2D4) or, if you really want to get serious (12W6v2) or over the top... one 12W7 with a JL10001. Whatever combo you use, remember to build/have built for you, the correct size enclosure for your subs. But, just because I like JL, doesn't mean that you will. Ask friends, etc., listen to different stuff, make your own judgement about it.

Good Luck.

Vern

Nope, RCA's on driver side, power wire on passenger side. I'm stumped.

As far as the 9813 goes, I won't be using the decks power so I didn't see a gain besides the slightly bigger display. I'm either going with Alpine or JL audio amps.

i would try grounding the stock deck directly to the chassis, instead of through the harness.

That is a very weird problem... im not sure what to say... my pioneer in my 98 WS6, no problems when i ran stock monsoon.

I have gutted it all since, and have all aftermarket stuff, but it did work fine in my car, along with all the other cars i have installed in.

Well when you hook up to a monsoon system you have to wire around the amp if your using the one in the deck. I forget where the factory amp is located. The RPM whine is from a bad ground or ground loop, which if you have both the head unit amp and the monsoon amp still running will cause the RPM whine. The click on happens because thats the monsoon amp clicking on using a amplified signal from the Alpine deck.

As far as amps go use the JL I work for a dealer that sells both and can tell you from personal experience the new V12s dont hold up to the power ratings they post. The JLs average $50 to $100 more but we have found they seem to give nearly twice the output and can be pushed very hard with no adverse affect to sound quality or amp life. In the 2 1/2 years we have been selling the JL amps we have only had one go bad that we installed and that one got water on it. They are by far the best amps in their price range.

Really, you cant use the one in the deck, and the monsoon amp... how does GM do it????

Agreed on the ground loop problem, and might believe the "clicking on" but i have never had that happen in countless monsoon cars i have installed in
