Default Need recom. for stereo overhaul

I have a '96 SS with the stock bose system. I would like to replace the HU with something that has iPOD ready hookup and maybe even pop out touchscreen. Looking to upgrade the system overtime and would maybe replace the stock 4 front speaker when I do the HU. Looking for some on the cheaper side since this car only goes out in the summer and doesn't get a ton of use other than that. Would like to keep the HU costs to 500 or less and a little more open on the speakers

Let me hear what your thoughts are.

And yes I would have done a search but it down right now and looking to order something in the next few days

I'd just go for a normal HU.
HU: something Pioneer, maybe a 6900UB. Could probably go even lower. I want a 7000BT personally. 800PRS and 880PRS are better but I don't think they're necessary.
Front: http://car.rainbow-audio.de/products...n=6&art=231160
Sail: http://car.rainbow-audio.de/products...=10&art=231517
Amp: Profile AP1040 (good brand for the price, but if you want something high end, Alpine PDX 4.100 as it'll have more power and be more efficient/run cooler)

You could also do "subs" in the sail panel instead. Let us know if you want to do that instead.

Throw out all Bose speakers, subwoofer, whatever.

Yeah, but I really like the look of the pop out screen and what ever it is it has to have an iPOD adpt. That is probably one if the main reason for changing HU and all. Plus better sound of course.

some Pioneers come with the adaptor I think, some need you to buy it separately.

Thanks for the input.

I really want to do this in stages since I am doing a lot of other things to the car right now...I would like to to do a new HU before the power tour this summer so I can cruise with the iPOD hooked up and sound decent..better than a FM crap hookup.

The Bose setup is going to be a pain to do that with. I'd say do it all at once.

You can replace the Bose head unit with any aftermarket one by using an adapter available from several companies such as PIE and Scoche.

Once you start looking at replacing speakers it becomes an all or nothing situation - you then have to replace all the speakers, the head unit, and the wiring at the same time. That's because the Bose speakers have individual amps attached to them that take low-level, high impedance input and power low impedance speakers. The system is wired using common ground but almost all aftermarket systems use floating ground.

Do the adapters convert the speakers to 4ohm or keep them at the 2ohm?

I saw in the FAQ that there are some replacement 2ohm speakers now

You can't convert speakers to a different impedance. The Bose adapters work much like a LOC (line out converter) by stepping down the output signal of an aftermarket head unit to a level that the individual Bose amps can use.

The FAQ covers Monsoon systems - Bose systems are completely different.

Hey thanks for the info. I was looking at some HU at best buy during lunch and the "kid" told me that the speakers might be converted but good to know there not.

thanks for the info.

So I guess my plan is to replace HU and replace blown rear speaker with approate 2ohm speaker to let everything fly until I upgrade all the speakers and sub.

Uh...no. The only speaker you can use to replace one of the Bose speakers is a factory one because each Bose speaker comes with an attached amp and aftermarket speakers will not work with the head unit.

If you try to replace any of the Bose speakers then you will have to replace all of them - along with the wiring and the head unit.

Off topic: Yes you can, using an impedance-matching transformer. It's not worth it in car audio though.

Yup, but we don't want to get into that when Bose vs. Monsoon is already causing confusion.

I have a Sony that comes with all of that usb input, iPod direct cable, and aux. input on the face. I'll even throw in the mounting kit, harness adapter, and the antenna adapter for $162.00 shipped. It also has dual illumination and would be better than Jenson or Dual.

Can you give me some more info on this? Model number or pic would be helpful.
