Default Memphis Components

I have Memphis MClass components in my doors. I have been playing with them trying to get them to handle some bass or midrange for that matter, but just can`t seem to. The crossover that comes with the speakers seems to be crossing over the woofer at a higher frequency than I like. I do have an Audio Control EQX installed in the system as well. Is there anything I can do to help these speakers without spending the money on new one`s? I am powering the system from a 1100 watt 5 channel Memphis Belle as well

Which speakers are they? http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/products/family.asp?id=1

How low do you expect them to play? Down to 80Hz is a realistic expectation with good car speakers. The less overall volume, though, the lower that can go.

They apparently have a range of about 40Hz-20kHz so they should do midbass frequencies just fine. Is the crossover frequency adjustable by chance?

Those are the one`s I`m talking about that I have in my car. I had bought another pair to put in the doors of my silverado, but never got around till the other day to install them. I replaced the passenger factory speaker with the memphis and left the factory speaker in the driver to compare the two. The factory speaker in the driver`s door on my 99 silverado produces a more full range sound. Meaning, I can hear a broader spectrum of frequencies in the factory speaker than the memphis speaker. I don`t know the exact HZ the memphis crossover is working at, but I can tell you that I know I should hear a deeper, more crisp sound from the components. I don`t expect to be getting subsonic bass from them, but I expect more than I am getting. Does any of that make sense? And no, the memphis crossover`s are not adjustable.
Thanks

I've had those very speakers, and crossed them over at 70hz (18db/oct) when I was listening to music, and 90-100 (18db/oct) when I wanted to listen loud.

The crossover does *not* block any of the bass frequencies from the midbass driver. You may have the highpass filter on your amp set a little too high, and that's what's blocking the bass from the doors, but it's not the passive crossover on the mid's and tweets that's doing it. That crossover is simply a lowpass for the mid's and a highpass for the tweeter.

Those speakers are very good, and have been in several competition level cars I've seen.. it's not the speakers, it's something with the installation, for sure.

Also, if you have any air leaks around the frame of the speaker, that will kill the midbass performance big time.

But first, check the settings on your amp. My money says it's there.

You may be right Eskimo. However, the one in my truck is running off the factory headunit. I haven`t installed any amps or anything in my truck. I know these speakers have to be capable of more than I`m seeing and it could be installation. However, there is only so much you can do to a door full of holes and window components. I`m definately at a loss for sure. I have played with the settings on my amp and eqx till I`m blue in the face. I never even turn on the system in my t/a just because it sounds like crap, so what`s the point.

They say those have .12in of Xmax and Xmech (meaning that they will bottom out at that excursion level). That is honestly... pretty terrible. At 50W input power, assuming an infinite baffle (which is not correct for car doors except with some speakers and airtight doors -- real life will be even worse than this assumption), you can hit that excursion level at 128Hz! Hopefully they merely messed up their rating.

Also, sometimes factory HUs have highpass filters

Well, from the sound they produce I think your on track dragonrage. These things are probably hitting around 128hz. I have never measured them, but my ears don`t lie. I have heard and had many stereo setups in my day. I have been out of it for a very long time, but I still know a good speaker when I hear one and these just aren`t cutting it. Any recommendations on a very nice sounding component set that would be up to par to my tastes? I am a sound quality type of person. I want a speaker that can best reproduce the sound the artist originally intended their music to be able to.

How about a CDT HD-62 component set? Or if you really want some bass from the doors the CDT HD-M6 component set. The M-6 has 10mm of xmax. I carry both and both would definetly fit those requirements. CDT has always been great at reproducing great sound quality. I had a special going on the CDT Eurosports as well that no one responded to for $449.00. These are normally $699.00-$899.00 depending where you shop and these are not the B-stock ones like on ebay. Let me know as these are incredible sound quality speakers and at a great price. HD 62 comp set: $299.00, HD-M6 comp set: $349.00, ES-62i comp set: $449.00. Or if you wanted to upgrade your just the doors and use the crossovers and tweeters you already have Ihave the M-6 by itself for $199.00 (pair). I can still get this pricing through the end of this month.

you're hearing a more full range sound from the stock speaker because stock systems have to produce a wide range of frequencies. The component set focuses on each speaker specializing in what it best reproduces. In other words they are designed to be used with a sub.

I installed a set of memphis 8 inch components in a friends tacoma. They sounded pretty bad at first. I took a spare set of mb quart xovers and put them in place of the memphis ones. Sounded great after that. There was just too much mid cut out by the memphis xovers.
