Yes, you can add the changer to any model year with a cassette head unit or to 2000 and newer models with the single CD head unit. The CD head unit didn't support the external changer until late in the 99 model year.
You will find the harness is already installed in the car even though it didn't come with a changer from the factory. The end of the changer harness is wrapped in foam and taped to the speaker harness under the left hatch trim panel.
