Sounds to me as if they've built you a box with enough airspace volume to have to be ported in order to sound right.
Ask your place if they have a prefab 12" sub enclosure laying around the shop. Most places do. Load that sub in it and see how it sound as most prefab units are about 1.0ft^3 for a 12" sub. This will help to determine if that is an issue.

i also find it hard to believe mtx posted wrong specs

Yea thats what I thought especially since the book that comes with the 9500 also says 1.25 cubic feet. But when we had it for that air space it sounded terrible. We made the box bigger and it sounded a little better. Would a ported box sound better in my car? I will take some pics of the box Tuesday for everyone to look at. I had 2 12" Jl audio w3's that sounded a lot better than this speaker. But I will try puttin that speaker in another box to see how it sounds, and see if that makes a difference.

Did the shop take into consideration the displacement of the 9500? They are pretty big. My friend has a 10" 9500 in his car with the TE1501D and that thing moves ridiculously. It wasn't clean sounding like an L7 but it moved well.

um L7's weren't made for clean bass, the sensitivity is only like 87. But anyways I've heard the 9500 and they are very respectable. Make sure the leads coming from the amp arent backwards and ensure that they go to both voice coils so that you are truly getting a 2 ohm load. Other than that you might want to look at gain settings, and if you have any, subwoofer settings on your head unit. Lemme know if this works.

How are ur gains set, What amp do u have powering it?

and yes l7's or l5's are defiantly more of an spl sub thatn sq, but if ur looking for loudness it should be pretty good

:edit: nm i just saw u have a mtx thunder amp, MTX amps are nice and usually put out more than theyre rated at i think that u should put the 9500 in a ported box n see what it sounds like

well it makes sense that the 2 12' w3's sounded better, that is double the cone area of the single 10" 9500

Never downed the loudness of a L7 because they are that. But yea I once had a two sub setup and one of the leads off the amp was backwards, but when i switched it it hit hard!
