Default Window motor/regulator question

I was told by the GM parts guy that you had to replace both the motor and regulator together. Is this true, or was he just trying to make a sale? My friend is selling an autozone motor for $30. The last one I replaced I got out of a junkyard, and replaced the entire assembly. Help me out here guys...thanks in advance!!

The regulator is the linkage/tracks that the motor powers to move the window.
You need to replace them if they get loose or provide excessive resistance in movement.
